XP has completely freaked out beyond all recogniition...PLEASE HELP!!!

I'm in a HUUUGE fucking mess tonight. My system was acting buggy yesterday and today after i installed a new dvd burner.

Today after a reset, it prompted me to start with last known good configuration and I chose yes.

now everything is totally fucked.

the windows start menu no longer exists it will not show up even in safe mode, some programs will not start others still work.

Is there any way that I can go back to the settings before i chose last known config?????

Any advice will be greatly appreciated!!!!!!

right click copy does not work.

I can't even drag and drop anything!!!! none of my files will move when I highlight my mouse over them!!!!

FUCK YOU WINDOWS XP!!!

great advice, but I CAN'T EVEN BACK MY SHIT UP!!!!

If you have another drive, see if you can switch that to primary and install XP on that, then back up your files from the main drive before reformatting it.

i'll try that, but is there a reinstall feature like with win 98 that I can install over what i have currently without losing files on the drive?

I am assuming that you do not have System Restore running?

last time i had a problem like that I took the drive out, put it in another pc and copied everything useful off it before attempting to install a new OS. As it happened I was lucky and the data didn't get erased, but it's a safe way to do things.

Yes, when you put the CD in and it starts going through it's thing, you will get a screen that asks if you want to set up Windows, use the recovery console or exit. Select the set up windows option. This will take you to another screen that asks what partition you want to use, select you main partition. The next screen should say that there is already an installation of Windows on the drive and ask if you want to repair or fresh install. You want to choose repair.

System restore point? -- Rollback... that would fix it.

You could go through booting individually allowing/disallowing individual drivers.

But seriously, see if XP set a restore point, these can be rolled back even via the command prompt.

yes. repair can work wonders. it's let me move an xp install from one hardware config to a completely different one without a complete reinstallation.

I don't recommend doing this in most situations, but this is what I did when my computer bugged itself to Hell and back: I installed XP over an old XP installation. This isn't a good long-term solution, but it should give you enough usability to back up your stuff. Admittedly, I am still using the same XP installation about 3 weeks after I installed it over the last one, and error-free. Only problems I have had are when I didn't delete an old program before I reinstalled it.

WinBlows is telling you that it is time to buy a Macintosh.

MexicanOnABike 07-08-2004 11:39 AM

i agree. do a repair from the CD. it worked for me 2 or 3 times.

and plz don't go for mac... you'll loose all the shit you have anyways!

try this.... when your desktop is up but you cant see your start menu. press ctrl+alt+delete. that should bring up your windows task manager. then from there go file.. new task (run).. then type in explorer. that might bring up your start menu. then you can try and back up your stuff.
