Best way to compress recorded TV programs?
I've been trying out the WinDVR3 program and recording several shows onto my hardrive. Now I'd like to know how I can shrink the files down without losing too much quality so I can burn them to disk. Any advice would be appreciated.

If you can handle something slightly more complicated, VirtualDub is free - and will let you compress with any codecs you like (including DivX 5).

thanks, i'll give those a try.
Now what about taking .avi videos and burning them to a dvd for use in console dvd players? I tried making a dvd using ulead but the 80mb files were being converted to over a gig! If there's any way to convert them without losing picture quality please let me know. |

DVDs are mpeg2 files and are HUGE in size when compared to modern avi codecs. Some standalone DVD players can play some DivX or even XVid, but this has not become a standard feature yet. Follow the link given in the previous post to fnd everything you need to know on the subject (including the capabilitites of specific DVD player models) and more.
