Headphones
 

I just built this pc and got some 6$ speakers from directron. (http://www.directron.com/hp2000.html)

and they work fine, but when i plug headphones into the jack, i hear a (hrmmm..) sound.

it doesnt happen when i plug headphones directly on to the case.

so, what's up w/ these speakers?

ummm....maybe the type of metal they used for the external headphone connection is the cause of the noise.

it is to be expected with any cheap sound-related product.
the more expensive they get, the less chance of interference (noise).

i suppose it could also be the wires leading to the external connection.

yeah probably picking up "mains hum" might try moving the position of the wires etc though its likely picking up transformer noise, are the speakers powered?

Could it have something to do with the fact that they cost $6?

as charliex says, probably the transformers noice, or your connector of the speakers is touching some other metal (e.g. case)

it does have it's own power adapter.

is it possible to get some type of headphone jack only sound card. My speakers have no headphone jack, so I have to reach around my PC to plug in headphones.

Sounds more like a grounding problem than transformer noise. Could be that your speakers really are not made to handle your particular headphones. This could stem from an impedance mismatch: your speaker output probably cannot handle the high impedance (like resistance) of your headphones.

OR:

Just move your computer and plug the headphones directly into your sound card. That should easily bypass the problem.

Get better speakers. Seriously. Why spend $99 on a sound card, and under $10 on speakers, especially on a new rig? Don't do it!
