ok, well, im trying to burn a couple videos on a DVD.

My problem is, a 150 megg vid file somehow takes up almost 2 gigs on my DVD....now wtf is up with that?!?!

im using myDVD with a lite-on burner.

anyone know what im doing wrong?

well...

Are you trying to burn it AS a DVD, or are you burning it as a data disc? I don't know if DVD-R works the same way, but with CD-R, if you have a bunch of mp3s that you burn onto a music CD, it will make it bigger. It will no longer be compressed. The same thing might be happening to you where you have, say, and AVI file, and it converts it to... whatever DVDs use. Dunno.

the 150M file is probably compressed video or mpeg1....sounds like mydvd is converting the 150M file to mpeg2 (dvd video). generally you get ~2hrs of video per dvd. is the file around 1hr?

yea, the files around 50 min

what i wanna know is how people are able to put whole movies into one DVD. For some reason, i cant put in more then 100 min on a DVD.

for now, im trying to use a converter that converts files into AVI-Mpeg1-Mpeg2-VCD-DVD to see which format takes the least amount of space.

It seems like a lost cause

it would help if i knew what format DVDs were made in

dvd's use mpeg 2 compression, if you look at the file structure, in the video_ts folder, the files will show up as *.vob files.

Looking at the website for that mydvd program, I would say that it is burning the discs so that you can use it in a regular dvd player (i.e. as video).

you might want to try using nero to burn the discs as a data dvd that is useable in a computer.

Your burning program should have the option that you can choose the DVD filesystem to be DATA and/or ISO9660. Then just drag&drop/add/whatever. Add Joliet to that and you can use longer names on files (like in modern filesystems).

Absolutely the same as in burning CD's. Just some extra space.

Also depends of the programme you use. I use ulead DVD Workshop 2, so you can change the compression amount which means you can fit more onto a DVD. I have tried Nero, but was not impressed with it.

im trying to make a DVD so u can watch it on a DVD player.

Question is, if i just burn a mpeg2 file on a DVD as a data CD, will it play on a player?

Alright, let me tell you what you need to do. First, get a program like TMPGEnc or another program that allows you to convert from avi to mpeg2 format. That's what you need to do to be able to play your video files on a standalone dvd player.
Now the reason your files are so large when you are trying to convert them is because the one you are trying to burn is compressed, heavily. When you go to burn it, it's decompressing it so you can watch it on your dvd player. decompressed movies take up a lot more space.
When you are going through the options to convert your files to mpeg2, most programs have options to compress the output. Tweak these options to better fit your movies onto disc.
Remember, the more compression you use, the worse the quality of the output. You can also change the resolution of the movie to a smaller size to make the file size even smaller.

that sounds almost right, on average you get ~120 mins of video. could mydvd be upconverting the sound to 5.1? that would give you less space for video. are you creating elaborate menus with video and sound?

ok, after a loooot of research, im able to fit long movie files onto a DVD. I got a converter that converts my AVIs into Mpeg2 files. Im now able to fit hours of PAL movies onto a single DVD.

But i now face a new problem. When i burn DVDs, some of the files are PAL and some are NTSC. Its the PAL files that i want. Anyone know of a good NTSC->PAL converter?

man...how come i can make mpeg2 files out of PAL formats and fit a lot of it in one DVD.....while a single small mpeg2 file in NTSC takes up so much damn memory......

is there something im doing wrong?
