X Shell Setup

How do all you *nix guys have your shells set up in X? I hate going through the menus everytime I want to use the command line. My two thoughts are assigning an xterm (or whatever program I use) to open on a keypress like F10 or something. I'd rather have the console always open though, so that it would be like the wallpaper. I don't think thats possible, but I've been toying around with the idea of getting the terminal permanently maximized. Enough rambling, but how do you guys set it up or do you have any suggestions for me.

What window manager/desktop environment do you use?

I'm trying to figure out one that works best for me, Gnome and KDE are too bulky for me, Enlightenment seems to be too complicated to configure so I find myself coming back to fluxbox.

I just have a toolbar at the top of my window w/ an icon to gnome-terminal (as well as about 15 other programs I use often). I find I rarely have to go to the menu. I use Gnome.

A mate of mine programmed the "Windows Key" to open up an Eterm for him (he uses Enlightenment).

I reckon one big xterm window wouldn't be enough. I usually have 4-5 going here at home when I'm working on something.

What he said. Just make an icon that opens a terminal window.

If I'm not mistaken, I don't think fluxbox has icons (but I've never used it, I've only never seen icons on anyone's screen that does use it). Perhaps you can create a key binding for it? Or edit your menu so that it's immediately available? Not that it helps, but in KDE I've been using a program called kuake that works like the Quake3 terminal - I even bound it to the ~ key so that when I want the terminal I just press ~ and then it pops down from the top of the screen

Good point. Fluxbox does have an "applet" area, though (I can't remember the proper name for it ATM.. something like a Docklet area). And in that applet area, you can have applets/docklets that allow you to have icons that can launch whatever you want.

Its called the Slit, but I'm not sure how to get icons in there- I'll take a look at the docs, see if its possible.

Ah Slit.. yeah, that's it.

You can make Slit window run both fluxbox native Dockaps and WindowMaker Dockaps (of which there are hundreds/thousands). If you make it run w/ WM Dockaps, just download a dockap that has quick-launch icons, and just add your icons to that.

Check out the docs http://www.fluxbox.org/docbook/en/ht...html#slitorder for more info. They provide links to a couple great Dockaps sites.
