TIVO or Cable company DVR?
 

Alright. Here's a good question for everyone. Which one do you prefer? Tivo or a Cable company DVR?

I have both. I like my Tivo better just because of it's functionality and ease of use.

I also like my Cable company DVR because I can record more then one channel at the same time.

Does anyone have a preference?

tivo is better imo... just because you can do more with it.

Tivo is much better. I have both Tivo and Time Warner's DVR.... Tivo hands down.

Tivo has more features than the cable DVR, if you can, I would go with Tivo. No Question.

But I think that the cable DVR is catching up to the Tivo and may at some point beat it.

Well maybe in terms of how many people use a cable DVR, yes. However, that doesn't mean that it is a better product. The reason that Tivo has more features than a cable DVR is because TIVO has a large number of patents covering the features and the hardware in its DVR. So Cable companies cannot offer those features unless they buy a license from TIVO.

So until Cable comanies do that you will have to wait quite a bit of time before the 2 products have the same features.

ok.. so what are these features that make tivo soo much better than a DVR from the cable company?

one major bonus on the cable co dvr is price. 15/month vs 200 to buy + 200 for lifetime subscription. Plus you can record 2 channels at the same time.. to do that with a tivo you would need 2 tivo's..

True...true. You gotta admit though, being able to watch/record two different shows at the same time is a huge draw to the DVR. Sometimes I have series that come on at the same time and the DVR allows me to be able to tape both. Can't do that with my Tivo.

if you still had your dish... you sure could.. DirecTV has 2 tuners in it.

I can program my Tivo over the internet... I can't do that with the DVR, if I forgot to program something or hear of something that's going to be in the next 2 hours I can program the Tivo via a webpage and it will record it.

Yeah. Didn't like Direct TV though. I like my TWC so much more. Especially since I get serious discounts for bundling my Road runner with it.

I haven't updated my Tivo stuff so I can't do the web stuff as of yet. But....so far I haven't really needed the update that badly as of yet.

so the only real advantage of tivo is that you can program it via the web?

Anyone use MythTV here? I haven't done it yet, been to busy but from what I hear it's an open source program that runs on linux that works like tivo.. Wouldn't this be a better solution than both TIVO and the cable co DVR? mostly cause it's free, and being open source you can make it do anything you want it to do programaticly.

I would love to get a Tivo think it would be mad cool, not too keen on the cable companies DVR only because i already pay em too fucking much money for borked ass basic ass cable with a converter box and NO premium channels with my Roadrunner added in im dropping almost $100/month :(

Nah. Tivo is still pretty cool. Just for an example, I wanted to watch a movie this morning and had paused the TV while I took a shower. Later when I came back I accidentally hit one of the channel buttons and when you do that you lose whatever you had paused. (bad side to Tivo) BUT...all I had to do was hit the record button and it told me when the movie's coming on again and I could just record that one. (good side to Tivo)

if MythTV has a wishlist then that's equal to Tivo.

IMHO if the MythTV breaks.. the wife says FIX IT!!! If the Tivo breaks... we go out to Best Buy and buy a new one.

Tivo seriously is the bomb.

I personally prefer the Replay over the Tivo, but both are great machines and far better than a DVR provided by the cable company.

I've used a couple PVR's in the past, but never Tivo. Could someone tell me what the "Wishlist" is all about and what makes it so wonderful? I'm actually running MythTV right now and have been tinkering with the source code. From what everone's been saying, it sounds like the "Wishlist" might be a neat feature to add.

Ah...ye old wishlist. It's awesome!!! Basically...whatever you may want to watch you can set it up in your wishlist and it will find it and record it for you whenever it's on. For example, if you like documentaries on UFO's, just put in "UFO's" in your wishlist and select the subcategory "Documentaries" and whenever one is on it will automatically tape it. Let's say you like Jamie Lee Curtis movies. Just put in her name in your wish list and every movie that comes on that has her in it...Tivo will record it automatically for you.

So as you can see...it's amazing!

Well....building a PVR will cost ya about the same if not more then just buying a Tivo. YOu can buy Tivo now for $129 and pay out the subscription for about $180 for a total of approx $300. In building your own box...the PVR card alone at it's minimum is $159 and that's JUST the card.
