make sure you have adequate cooling. some ram sinks for your vid card even better. your video memory is what youd really want to overclock for the most performance boost. after that get atitool and use it to oc your card. it can automatically overclock your card to the most stable frequency with no artifacts.

first off do you understand teh risk of overclocking, and have you over clocked your CPU befor. i over clock, there is nothing wrong with it. but you have to be sure that you know what you are doing.

start with ATItools

open it up and adjust teh frequencies. SLOWLY, and check to make sure that it does not have any artifacts.

if you can have a buddy whose done a bit of overclocking keep an eye on what your doing...

its easy to fry stuff if your not careful about it...
directions for overclocking

increase speed a tiny bit... stress test... watch for abnormalities...
no abnormalities repeat...

if abnormalities seen decrease clock by 1 increment... look for abnormalities if none found you should be gold... if some are then decrease clock another increment and repeat second part...

Hey guys I'm doing the same right now, except it's a 9700 pro, how long should i wait for abnormalities to occur?

Is a serious update of my cooling system necessary?

I have a 9500 Pro that overclocks pretty well. But I had to flash the cards' BIOS before I could change any settings. My 9500 Pro actually reads as a 9700 Pro now.

I know I may sound hopelessly ignorant now, but can anyone give me a walkthrough of how to do this using ATItool?

I downloaded and installed it, and the first thing it told me was to install a patched version of driver files, to make my 9500 run as a 9700. They directed me to http://softmod.ocfaq.com/index.php for these files. Should I try this? Then, if I do use it, how do I test that the card is functioning correctly? Do I need 3Dmark or does ATItool have the capacity to test it?

Alright, now when I'm using ATItool, there are two sliders, one for Core and one for Memory. I'm assuming those are the clock speeds. I figured the memory would be more effective to overclock, so I tested the max memory speed, and it brought it to about 265... is it saying I should UNDERclock my card? Default is 270 for that value.

I have several case fans placed so as to cool the video card directly (air passing directly over the card fan to push the hot air out the back), so cooling shouldn't be too much of an issue, but could that be a problem I'm getting?

I'm just a little confused, as you can see.

Take a look at The Firing Squad's: "ATI Radeon 9500 Pro Overclocked

The first page should be helpful.
