Saving a Movie from DVD to your computer.
 

Hey all,

I want to know if there is a way to save a Movie from a DVD to a format that I can watch on my computer using winamp or WMP. As in MPEG mode or something similar. I don't have a DVD burner but I would like to watch movies on my comp without putting the DVD in all the time...

Also is there a way just to get certain scenes from a movie too.. there are some scences from movies that I just get an itch to watch from time to time... Like Shannon Elizabeth's entrance scene in Jay & Silent Bob Strikes Back...

I would like to be able to save the movies so I can just click and play them on winamp maybe have a little playlist of scenes I like to watch.

unfortunately this is highly illegal if you live in US. and grey if you live in canada. welcome to the wonderful word for the dmca. linky that’s right you can get prison terms greater then that if had raped someone. still since i am in canada i will put this as "personal backup" or "fair-use", and give you a rundown of some steps. do you have a large Hard Drive? image the dvd. nero can do that. or you could rip it into divx or xvid (which just released 1.0). i think the forum rules here prohibit any direct links to theses types of programs, sorry. but google is your friend.

Technically I don't think it's illegal if you already own the movie; like making a backup copy. As ni42 said, Google is your friend. :)

I do own the movies I plan to copy again I am not really even making a back up... I do not have a DVD burner and don't want to copy them to disc or anything. I am just looking to get them down to a managable size to watch in Winamp or cut scenes out of a movie...

and I have a 100gig harddrive so lots of space to fill.

Doom 9 is all you need to learn how to do anything that involves a DVD and a computer. It's an excellent site full of illustrated tutorials and the people there really know what they're doing...

A law is a law, irrespective of how many people ignore it. It may not be just, it may not be enforced, it may not be thought well of, but it is a law. That, however, is neither here nor there.

The "fair use" clause of copyright law states that you're allowed to make a backup for personal use - and while this is debated a lot, no one is gonna sue you for making a backup copy of a DVD you own if you don't share it.

That said, KnifeMissile was right on the money, Doom9 is all you'll ever need to know.

I believe the DCMA states that you can't make any backup copies because that act in itself violates the copy protection clause in the DCMA. But I'm no lawyer.

As for watching the film from the hard disk, try Nero Recode. However, you'll need to capture the entire DVD using DVD Decryptor first.

I believe that the DMCA says that - except in the case of research - you can't bypass copy protection. It doesn't remove your right to free use, just limits it. Granted, the DMCA sucks big time and there's tons of legal talk going back and forth about it.

"Oh sure you can make backup copies - unless we put copy protection in. Oh, our copy protection is only ROT13ing it? Too bad, it's still copy protection. Break it and go to jail."

I use WinDVD to take snap shots of a dvd. It works very well. I have followed a lot of guides when I am copying my DVDs to my Hard Drive and it takes a lot of space and patience but in the end, it looks good. I use a Divx codec and most of the DVDs come out close to the original.

Okay, I also want to do this.
I have a macintosh computer, and I just want an extremely simple way of doing it. I read alot of the guides, and they just went over my head.
Is there a nice mac program that will rip DVDs onto the HD and make them into DivX, XviD or whatever?

I found a great program called Fair Use Wizard. Worked better for me than all the Doom 9 stuff.
