Ripping DVDs onto comp
How do you rip DVDs onto your comp in .avi or .mpeg form? I always lose my DVDs or i loan them out and never get them back, so I was thinking of backing them up....

Check out Doom9 for details (eg DVD Decrypter, Gordian Knot) - though you'll find you need 4-6Gb of space per DVD unless you put the effort in to encode the DVD into a different format.

First you have to rip it, then encode it, usually using DivX. Its not the easiest process in the world--lots of things can go wrong. But, once you get the hang of it, it isnt too bad.
Like cliche said, Doom9 is an excellent resource. |
DVD Decrypter is really good. A 'one-click' type deal. I think there's a program called DVD Shrink that will compress it for you (also with one click), albeit not at the very highest quality. As said before, Doom9 and its forums already have the answers to all the questions you'll ever have.

lots of good guides to show you how to do it. myself, i use dvd shrink to rip the dvd then (if its greater than 4.7 gigs) compress it to fit on a single layer dvd. pretty easy. |
DVDXcopy. Been using it to rip some DVD's I wanted to keep on my HD. To do it, you have the program rip the DVD, then copy off the files before it tries to burn them, otherwise it erases the files.
