well basically i keep having an overheating problem when gaming.. have a HP case/mobo.. im tryin to figure out what the problem is and fix it.. any help would be great

How many case fans, and is your heatsink/heatsink fan stock? If so I think getting a better (full copper) heatsink and a fast (4-6k rpm) heatsink fan would do your comp a big difference.

Also.. how hot is the room your computer is in, and what kind of temps are we talking about?
My comp runs 34-36 idle, 39-42 full load (For reference).

Exactly how hot are you talking about? Temperatures vary a LOT from system to system. The biggest variable in how hot your system is is definitely the room temperature. I don't care if ya have an SLK-900 with a Tornado on your CPU, if your room temperature is hot, your CPU is gonna run hotter than usual too. If your CPU is below 60 celsius then it's fine.

well the comp shuts off.. thats how hot it gets.. im in the basement.. a/c is on in the house and its mad cold down here..

yea everythign in the case is stock parts..
2 fans.. side panel is off too..

K, What your probably gunna wanna do is throw maybe 30 bucks towards getting a ThermalTake Volcano 7+ and 2 regular TT 80/whatever size your case fans are. Throw the side panel back on, and move some of the wires around inside to help airflow (I use those plastic grip things, and move the wires out of the way). If you use ide drives, it helps to have round ide cables... if you have sata, no need to worry. The heatsink is pretty cheap (18 bucks), and does a hell of a job (I use this heatsink on 2 of my computers).

If you wanna throw some bucks towards it, a ThermalRight SLK Series will do you some good. Depending on fan, it can be loud or quiet... mines loud.

I haven't seen your case yet, but I'm guessing it's pretty small. You should consider upgrading the case to one with more fans and better airflow, especially with that powerful video card in there.

If your not too short on cash you might want to consider liquid cooling. Its a fun case mod and can usually be done from $100-whatever you want to spend. But if not thik about geting a heat sink for that vid card too. one with a fan on it. i can't say for sure but that not the usual stoke video card and wasn't designed specifically for that case. plus video card cooling fans pretty cheap ( specially if you just buy a case fan, some metal screws, and duct tape and afro-engineer the thing).

if you dont care about drilling a few hole maybe you could mount your PSU outside of your case. i did it on my old HP computer before

Exactly my sentiments.

I do hate that my cpu temp idles at 50c in the summer because of the heat. When I built the comp in winter the temps were half that.

If its 'mad cold down here' it sounds like you are not getting a good heat transfer between the CPU and the heat sink, seeming that you got a new heat sink, you should solve your problems when you attach it, make sure you use a thermal grease to allow the heat to transfer between the heat sink and the cpu better,

My 2 cents on what i think may have happened:
The heat sink and CPU became separated by some degree so that the heat was not transferring well. This happened to a friends computer, the manufacturer did not attach the thermal stuff wrong (they went with a cheep pad thing) and it only covered half of the die of the CPU so half got the heat taken off and the other half did not, this caused massive heat problems. We took it off, scrapped the crud that was on it off and put some artic silver on it, and it dropped the temp by 35 F (no kidding)
