"average" Longhorn PC specs
Quote:
I guess my 700 Mhz laptop and 1100 Mhz desktop won't do so hot with longhorn then..... |
Well, it is at least 2 years off, and Intel is supposed to introduce 4-5 GHz processors in the near future, so it's not that crazy. I don't think the standard will be quite that high in two years, though. Maybe 3, but not two years.

Longhorn 4029 ran ok on my 1.8 Ghz (my friend is a beta tester) and I'm sure they're talking about a Server OS not a desktop. I can tell you you will need at least 1GB of RAM for WinFS.
build 4074 just leaked. Screenshots: http://www.windowslonghorn.net/modul...view_album.php |
Jesus. If those are real, then they look incredibly awesome. Helluva lot better than Windows Fisher-Price Edition.

"expected to recommend"
Probably means they're gonna knock off a lot of features, call it home edition.. I'm also thinging that dual proc setup is a server, not a standard workstation...have it doing lots of storage (Exchange) and be an AP, maybe? |

I'm still interested in the reviews for the software, that's where it will really matter. |
There's some new pictures on the main page at http://www.neowin.net from the Longhorn Build 4074 with the Desktop Windows Manager enabled. Looks quite interesting.

I expect that Microsoft will require a subscription style monthly fee in order to get updates. They'll probably release it half-done too to make basically unusable if you're not subscribing. I've heard too that the encoding/encryption will make it such that copywrighted material is unaccessable without paying a fee/alerting the copywright holder. Kind of like if every photocopier at the library had a police officer stationed next to it.
Speculation on my part, but if either of these things are true I won't be upgrading. Plus is "Longhorn" going to be Texas themed? blech. |

not planning on touching anything past XP for a loooong time. The only look I can tolerate for more than 5 seconds is the simple and efficient win2k look with all of that stupid eyecandy turned off and WMP,Outlook & OE, and other crap ripped out.
If WinXP Corporate w/o Service packs works for me now, then there is no reason I can see to upgrade to anything besides Debian or another *nix distro. |

Unless there's an epic change with Longhorn, I see no reason to upgrade. Like it's been said, there doesn't _appear_ to be anything major in change, just a little wasted space on the side.

This should work, but I guess the site I am using is screwy.. Let me know if the picture shows up |
Just a few things...
1) Longhorne has been delayed a few years, to something like 2009. If you're still using your current computer by then, then using Longhorne will be the least of your worries. 2) The current alphas out are pretty much XP with some extra "features" They don't have any of the major components that will make Longhorne Longhorne. No new filesystem, etc. |
