Is there a way to make outlook 2002 (XP pro) cache email locally. Every time I want to look at an email, outlook re-downloads it from our mailserver. That takes too long, especially if the mail is over a 100k. I'd like to have outlook download, store in cache, and hopefully speed things up.

Possible?

I am assuming you are talking about a work machine using Exchange as your mail server.

You can change your default delivery location to a pst file on your local machine. Click Options, Email Accounts. View/Edit Accounts. Select your mail account, and down at the bottom left of the screen is a drop down that says "deliver new email to the following location". If a PST file is not listed there, you can create a new pst file.

This should then store any new messages in your pst file instead of your mailbox on the exchange server. Down side to this is that if your system goes down, you loose your mail unless you make regular backups of it.

It shouldn't. Outlook sets up different files for local storage for each user, under documetns and settings\Local Setting\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\ for each user. as long as your not sharing a login ID, you should be ok.

Go to control panel, click on the Mail icon.
Click on Data files. Click on Add. Select Outlook Personal Files (.pst)

Apparently my "admin rights" only give me access to what they feel I should administer. After clicking add, I don't get any files to select.
I'm bummed.

Have you looked at configuring your Offline Folders? This is where Outlook downloads messages to the OST file.
