Ordering BIOS Update

After a bad BIOS flash that left my motherboard (ASUS A7V8X-X) useless and me computerless several months ago, I have decided that another BIOS update will help me fix several problems with my new motherboard (mainly, compatability with ATI video cards). However, being fearful of another bad flash, I decided to order a new BIOS chip with the new version already written to it for $25 from the manufacturer, ASUS.

My question: have any of you had to order a new BIOS chip, especially from ASUS, and if so, how was your experience with them and the chip? If you ordered it from another motherboard manufacturer or independent site, please share too.

I would have flashed it then if it screwed up ordered the new chip, no use spending money on some thing not needed.....

I have flshed hundreds of mobo's with no real problems, have had a couple of bad flashes but always been able to reset the bios with a jumper and it go back to the original

But to answer your ? no i have never ordered a new bios, never saw a need

I would do that if I had a spare computer. Since I don't, I would be stuck without a computer for two weeks while I RMA the board. I'd rather pay $25 and know that I always have a backup if any BIOS flash goes wrong.

Silly question here, why didn't you order a new chip for you old board when the old chip was messed up during the procedure?

Seems easier than tossing the board.

Do'h! I really should have done that. That board, before the bad flash, was the most reliable ever. Hey, at least it cost me less to send it back and buy a syringe of Arctic Silver 3 ($20 bucks total) than a new chip ($25).

Without a functioning computer, my reasoning skills must have declined.
