True 3D desktop replacement

Looks awesome... but..

Appears to me that you would need at least a gig of Ram, but I cannot find a "System Req" on the site...

the videos look really cool!

Anyone want to try it on a spare computer and tell us all how it performs?

Redjake 04-15-2004 10:35 AM

that's pretty awesome - I might give it a shot sometime

Redjake 04-15-2004 10:39 AM

ok I'm trying it now.

sixate 04-15-2004 10:42 AM

That is pretty cool.
Maybe when I get some extra time I'll try it out.

Redjake 04-15-2004 10:54 AM

ok, works pretty good so far. a bit different, but it definitely works. I'd like to see this become mainstream.

Redjake 04-15-2004 10:54 AM

by the way, it works fine on my system. GeForce 4 Ti4200 128 MB, Barton 2500+, 768 RAM

EDIT: Ok, it's sorta lame. You can't do anything with the Windows or Icons really when you are IN SphereXP. It's just an organizer. Maybe it says that on the website, but I didn't see it. For instance, if I wanted to type a reply on TFP in this window, I would click Post Reply right? Wrong. You double click the Window you are looking at (whether it be in the foreground or background) and that maximizes it. Then you type the response, and then you can go BACK to SphereXP. Simply a method of organizing multiple windows, that's all. Ah well.

Now THAT I like!

bltzkriegmcanon 04-15-2004 03:37 PM

Both of those look really cool.

manalone 04-15-2004 03:49 PM

Actually, it ran fine on 256mb on my laptop. They suffer the classic problem in that they can't intercept window openings.

And, in fairness, RedJake, it's a very early test version...

the_marq 04-15-2004 04:17 PM

OK, the instructions were "(just unzip it and run it)."

I did those 2 things on 2 different XP computers and all I get is an error.

How the hell did you get it to work?

Actually, thats all I was hoping it would do, gonna try this out for sure now.

and in fairness, it's not gonna change from the early test version to the finished copy. it's meant as a window and document organizer, nothing more. I didn't say it was necessarily a badly programmed application, I'm just stating my opinion that it's not that cool. Not as cool as it COULD be. The problem is: I highly doubt they will make it to where you can edit stuff in the windows that are in the Sphere. So it's lame :)

Here's another 3d desktop if anyone wants to try it.

http://www.3dna.net/products/desktop.htm

It looks a lot different than the other desktops mentioned.

spived2 04-16-2004 08:47 AM

bob32, that last one looks very similar to the "3d" interactive desktop thingy that came with my old packard bell 100mhz pos. It was fun for about 5 minutes then it just kinda got in my way.

I like the look of that spherexp. It would be very nice to just zoom away from windows and zoom in on others, that way you could see more windows at the same time. I'll have to check this out.

Testing that on the house's Media PC...anything that keeps us from having to negotiate text menus on the TV is good times :-)

zxello 04-21-2004 01:25 AM

hmmmmm imagine what it would be like with 4-6 monitors set up in a curve type set-up..... \_/ < like that only in a 3d curve (plz say you understand what im trying to say)
