New gaim version out!
After a couple of months without a release, the gaim developers released the newest version of gaim (0.76) on April 1st.
Over the couple of months that they didn't release, they did a hell of a lot of improvement on the client (judging by the changelog). Get all the info and links at the Gaim website here. I posted this because I believe there is quite a few gaim users here. For those who don't know what gaim is, it's a multiprotocol chat client (so you can run MSN, YIM, ICQ, AIM, etc, etc. all in a single client <like Trillian, but better>) |
thanks for the heads up ;) i use gaim exclusively and rather anxious to see this new changelog .
|
Gaim program = old and busted
<a href="http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=gaimauctions&completed=0&sort=3&since=-1">Gaim auctions</a> = new hotness  (Just kidding, Gaim rocks, but be sure to check out their fun and silly auctions :)) |
How would you say it compared to Trillian?
|
depends. I have only tried Trillian a couple times and I don't like it at all. However, it should also be said that the Windows version of Gaim relies on the windows version of GTK which can be somewhat buggy. I know the Gaim team applies patches a lot to work on fixing that, but I haven't tried the Windows version in awhile. However, they're working on a core/ui split, so eventually (hopefully fairly soon) there will be a native windows version :D
There is no skinning, so if you like that aspect of Trillian you should know that. Gaim and Trillian have a bit of a history of sharing things with eachother....started out not so civil AFAIK, with Trillian using some of Gaim's code (it's open source) without giving them credit for it, but it seems to be more civil now as they have both exchanged code with each other recently. So, as far as connectivity, etc, they're pretty much the same. |
wow, is gaim for windows a recent thing? i've only ever messed around with it for linux, and liked it better than any messenging package i've tried
|
They've had WinGaim for a while now, I think. On the gaim page it's on the side titled "Windows Port" (or here).

I also like Gaim's lay-out more, but that's just a personal preference. |
To me, gaim compared to trillian is like notepad compared to Word.
Everything I need to do is in notepad. I use notepad all the time, and it has yet to fail me. Notepad makes me happy. Word does what notepad does, but also does everything else. It also weighs about forty times more than notepad. I like notepad. I also like gaim. [edit] ps. Those ebay auctions are hillarious. Good idea too. |
I've been using Gaim for all of two hours, but I'm freaking loving it. It's version .81 so maybe it's up to snuff. No problems so far, and I'm really liking the idea of tabbed IM convo. Sweet. Now where the fuck are the pics.....
and where's my 'status' self-display.... |
Pics are Tools->Accounts->Modify the account you want the picture for...
Not sure about the away... But then, you already knew that cause I'm talking to you in #tfp hehe. |
Don't right click on the system tray to access away messages (in Windows), it's bugged right now. It won't let you select them, and I have a feeling it interrupts the screensaver or power settings for your monitor (i.e. you can't go "idle").

I have yet to get this to work on my Linux comp... maybe I'll give it a shot tonight.
|
a hard time getting Gaim to work under LINUX?? Very odd. If you have troubles, please post about them - I'm very curious.

I'm one of the die-hard Trillian fans. In fact, I liked it so much I actually paid for the Pro version. I remember trying Gaim awhile back and never really liked it. With Trillian's XML style skinning, if you know what you're doing, you can customize it to look however you want to for the most part.
The concept of both programs is good, though. I use MSN and AIM at work and use the "official" versions instead of lumping them together with Trillian and am very sad by this. I'm too used to finding all of my contacts in one place, having all of my IM windows look and behave the same way. And don't even get me started on how bloated, nasty, and awful the new Yahoo client is... |
I use Miranda.. it's okay.

gaim is fairly standard right out of the box. No flashy graphics or anything, but it does it's job well. All depends on opinion, I guess. |
SM, thanks for askin me why it wouldn't work because it went in perfectly. I hated having to use aMSN and Linux AIM seperately and I couldn't even get all of my messangers. Now I need to update my toolbars and my shortcuts. Thanks a bunch
|
question: is gaim like trillian in that it allows yahoo, msn, aim and icq, or is it just an aim client

Hmm, I'm not sure that Fink is necessary to install *NIX programs on OS X anymore. I don't know for sure, but I have a friend with OS X and I'm pretty sure I remember him saying something about no longer needing Fink.
I'll try to remember to ask him and post back here. |
Um... Do you guys understand all that is going on with gaim? Did you notice the increase in pop-ups? You should. The main feature of gaim is to entice you with links to "stuff" and to also inundate you with pop-up ads, a search bar that directs you to "approved" vendors (vendors who pay gaim), and an "always-on" connection to the internet to watch your timer so they can get more ads to your computer in hopes you'll buy something. If you can stand the slamming, then by all means be my guest. But no whining about how your P4 3G machine with 1G of RAM is slow every time you connect online. It's your PC, you should know what is on it.

lol, I think you're thinking of GAIN.
|
hehe yeah.
GAIN is a piece of shit.. GAIM is of the gods ;) |
I have been having problems with gaim on my laptop running gentoo kernel 2.6.4 everytime i send a message to someone gaim disconnects. Anyone know how to fix this?

As for the problem of Gaim crashing every time you IM someone 4evar, I'm not really sure. Only time Gaim has crashed for me after an IM was when I was direct connected to someone and they sent me a significantly large file through that. Not a common occurance though and I can't always reproduce it. |
