AIW Quality
 

Greetings All,
My friend burnt me a DVD of X-Files episodes. He used his 9600XT AIW to capture the videos. When he gave them to me I was expecting, honestly, DVD quality. What I got was medium grade VCR quality of video. Is this the quality of AIW's or does he not have it configured properly? Just wondering. Thanks and cheers


P.S. His 9600XT AIW only has 128MB of RAM. I thought one of the hallmarks of the XT moniker is 256MB of RAM. What gives? How then is his 9600XT AIW different from a 9600 PRO AIW?

I know jack and shit about video recording, but the difference between a Pro and XT is raw speed, not the actual memory. A 9600XT 128 MB will perform better than a 256 MB 9600 Pro.

If he recording them using the tv tuner program they will come out like shit...i have an ATI TV wonder card and it records live tv really shitty.....one of my friends has a older AIW card and it does a beautiful job recording video from VHS tapes at high quality. But to do that you need to switch it to the highest quality setting and have ALOT and i mean ALOT of free hard drive space.

Also need a fast cpu to encode on the fly, or you can use uncompressed which will take up a bunch of hard drive space.

I've got the AIW 9800 Pro and the quality is strictly dependent on the settings of the capture program. You can select from 4 basic levels or a custom. Even on the second best of the four I get dvd quality recording.

Another problem could be that he didn't choose to record it in mpeg2 format. When he went to burn the DVD it had re-encode the video file, and anybody will tell you that re-encoding a compressed file will lead to quality loss.

Anything higher than a 1.5Ghz will do fine for on the fly compression and having a defragged hard drive helps too. I don't have any problems with mine, but I've also got a dedicated HTPC with a second HD for video recording. Bottom line is that you can get higher than DVD quality video with no problem, but it depends on your settings and how much space you're willing to take up.
