help! new (assembled) pc, hangs after POST
hi, thanks in advance for any assistance you can give!
i just purchased the following items (all new): Gigabyte GA-7N400-L MB AMD Athlon XP 2700+ 2 sticks of 265MB RAM, DDR Antec case w/ 350wt PS to them i have added: PCI vid card floppy drive when i turn on the computer, i get a single beep (successful POST), and then the computer hangs. the correct processor speed is showing, as is the correct amount of RAM. i cannot get into BIOS, and i see no lights on the floppy at all. the keyboard flashes once during POST, but then is completely unresponsive. i have tried resetting CMOS, via both the jumper and removing the battery and shorting the contacts. i have tried removing the floppy, and replacing the vid card with a fast AGP, all to no avail - i simply cannot get past this one point. does anyone have any suggestions, or is it time for me to RMA either the PS or the MB? Thanks in advance for any help!

I had the same thing happen last year when I built a PC. It turned out to be a bad MOBO, and I had to RMA it, twice
If you have spare parts(PSU/RAM) laying around try swapping them just to make sure it isn't one of those things. Just out of curiosity.... Did you get a new hard drive? Or did you just try using the old one without a fresh format? Well, I guess it doesn't matter because you should still be able to access your BIOS. |

Sounds like faulty RAM to me, even though you should still be able to get into BIOS. Weird hard drive settings can fuck it up like that, though! Make sure the jumper is correct on the hard drive. My mobo (also a Gigabyte) hangs like a fucker if I have the HDD with the wrong jumper setting.

take everything out except for the essentials. mobo, processor and probably 1 stick of ram. try to boot. if it boots fine, start adding items 1 at a time. sometimes, it's just a matter of not having ram plugged in all the way. do you have a cooling fan on the processor and a heat sink? if you do, make sure the contacts are made, sometimes the processor gets hot enough to just shut down. it doesn't take any more than 15 seconds for the processor to get really hot.
if it still doesn't boot, try the other stick of ram and work it all over again. as i said...try removing everything. no ide cables, no floppy cables, no front usb plugs, no nothing. it helps to narrow the problem down.

Check the Beep Codes list for your Mobo. I had a similar problem when I was working on my PC, and the Beep Code pointed me right towards the RAM. Sure enough, reset the chips and all went fine.
Any errors before post should be pointed out. One long beep, 2 short ones.. etc..
