DVD Video color clouds.

I have a Sony DVD player with an ok RCA sytle Composite cord running video to the Sony amp/receiver. (Digital Coax running the audio from the dvd to the receiver). I have another 'decent' (thick cord, or at least thick insulation, gold connectors) RCA type Composite video cable running from the receiver video out to my tv, which is an older, non-flat Samsung. I would have component video if my tv supported and justified it, the tv is going to be the next upgrade.

My problem is with DVD video. As I'm watching movies clouds of colour form in the corner. Yellow-green in the top right, redish or blue-greenish in the top left. Not opaque, but kinda hard to describle, kinda like stationary clouds. It isn't as noticable when the color of that portion of the screen is supposed to be dark, but when its light, such as a blue sky, it really shows and bugs me to no end. They are smallish, taking up about a 10th of the viewing picture in the top corners. I think this only happens with widescreen, but I don't have or rent many non-widescreen dvds so I'm not certain. Accordingly, I'm not seeing any odd color blobs in the black areas, but it might be there. I haven't noticed this happening on regular tv, but that's not currently run through the receiver.

Any idea what is happening and how to stop it? Thanks.

It sounds like magnetic interference of some sort. These kinds of color blobs form when the electron gun is pulled too far out of whack by a magnet.

I have a center speaker sitting on top of the tv, although to my understanding they are all shielded. I've just watched the blobs come back without the speaker. Would it be a permanet misalignment that requires the tv to be opened up and fixed?

If it's just magnetized, you shouldn't need to open it up; a degaussing coil should fix your problem.

Question is: do you leave the speaker up there all the time, or do you just put it up there when you fire up a movie? If it's up there all the time, you may not be seeing it with full frame (full screen) video, but you'll see it when you get a good widescreen movie in.

No worries. Best thing to do is to get it a little further from the screen. I know: they're supposed to be shielded! Depending on the manufacturer, they will shield them in different ways, some of which are not as effective.

Also, the magnetic effects may take some time to go away, so don't worry if you still see it a month from now.
