Domain webspace
Looking to buy domain web space at a reasonable cheap price.
Basically I want to learn how FTP works and a place to post up pics from my digital camera and eventually learn how to create a webpage. I’m a beginner so just need a place to have some fun and get a learning experience. Also if I ever get a website built by a professional will I be able to post it here? :) |
I use http://www.best-machine.com at the recommendation of one other TFP user. I've been relatively pleased with them, and considering the low monthly price, I can't complain.
They've answered all of my technical questions within 45minutes in every occasion. I've also used http://www.powweb.com without any serious issues. I've heard good things about http://www.lunarhost.com too, but in the end, best-machine.com was less expensive and gave me everything I needed. But, if you're just interested in plugging around, then a free host might be more in order. Maybe http://50megs.com/ would be a good fit? It all depends on how much you want to learn, and how much you are willing to pay. PS: Powweb used to allow you to mail in a check if you didn't have access to a credit card. You had to pay quarterly, which was the drawback to this setup, but you're only talking about $24... |
i use http://www.doteasy.com .
you can register your domain there, AND they have a $0 hosting program. 20MB of free space, 1GB transfer per month, email accounts, etc. this is great if you're just starting out with learning to code/design your own pages... they have add-ons, like cgi/ssi/frontpage extensions, etc. at an extra charge... or you could go with their paid hosting services which are the best and cheapest IMHO. seriously. check out doteasy. |
Here is what I've used since last Janurary of 03:
I've never once had any problems, and have actually had my account upgraded a few times for free. Thier servers get on average of 400-450KB/s speed if thats of any issue to you, or any other viewers fo this post. They also have excellent service/support, you send them a message (Very similar to a private message on a forum) and they reply within the hour. I know this may look like a lot of space that you may not need, but I currently have 680 of the 1000MB of space being used, only 200~ of it is NOT photographs from my digital camera, images build up over time. If you are anything like me, I keep all my photo's. Also for a small idea if you want to keep somthing like a photo website, take a look at the coppermine image gallery (click on my www icon under this post, and click the big image on the website it takes you to, to get a idea of what I mean.) www.anhosts.com - 9.95$ a month, down to 7.95$ a month if you buy a years worth. I suggest Godaddy.com for hosting and domain name stuff. That's what I got for my mom's website, and it hasn't failed yet. 60 GB transfer/month and 400 MB webspace :) Overkill for her site, but it's only like 7 a month

www.p4host.com
$12 quarterly for 300mb's of space and 12gb's of transfers a month. So far, zero problems, very fast. |
www.frag-wire.com
They host my counterstrike server, but give me unlimited space and bandwidth for 30 bucks a month. CS server included. |
thanks guys for all your help! Im going to surf through all these and pick one and show everyone my first webpage once its done.
Will I need a static IP to get started? |

I'm very happy with www.all-inkl.com
This is a German site though. |
