Help w/ SATA hdd plz

hey
My friend bought a SATA HDD 160GB Barracuda... He actually went all out, with a Athlon 64 3200+, 1GB Corsair XMS, Radeon 9800 Pro, and the Asus K8V Deluxe Mobo...

The problem is, as we were trying to set up the pc and install Windows XP, the SATA HDD couldnt be identified, or found, or booted from, in short... we were very lost... even w/ the BIOS that came w/ the mobo

SATA hdd's can be used as the main hdd that its booted from rite?.. What are we missing here? Plz ask me questions that you need for you to help me if im not giving enought info.. thanks for the help

Does the bios see the harddrive in the first place (i.e. is it working)? If so, is the bios set up to use the SATA disk as boot device? If so, is the sata controller a RAID-controller? I doubt it, but if so, you might need a RAID driver disk to install Windows.

And yes, SATA drives can be used as boot disk - I have that setup running along just fine, without any extra worries. Well, except for that bios setup thing.

IF the bios doesn't even see the drive in the first place, something is wrong with either the motherboard, cable, harddisk or your hardware setup (cable wasn't plugged in?).

Note, if you do manage to install, don't worry about the 137 gig harddisk limit instead of 160. Earlier windows XP versions have a max there, which is solved in SP1. Just sayin'.

dont worry about not identifying it.

there should be a setting in bios to make the SATA drive appear as an ide drive.

just hunt for it, it took me a few seconds to figure it out when i had the same problem(i anticipated something like it)

it was in the same page as usb keyboard etc on my bios

I just set up my new system with a SATA HDD. I might even have the same model as you, I just just can't remember it right now. I have a Gigabyte Pro2 mobo. When I set things up, the drive was recognized by the BIOS, but before I could install WinXP, I had to copy a few files from one of the CD's that came with the mobo to a floppy. When you go to install xp, right at the start there will be a message about SATA setup or something like that. You press F6, put the floppy in and then everything was fine.

My mobo is different than yours so who knows how it will be different, but the F6 thing should still work as long as you have a floppy with the correct files on it.

I'm sure you've already done this, but look through the mobo manually very well and make sure you catch any notes about setting hte system up with a SATA drive.
