[Linux] Redhat 7.2 vers 9.0 ?
 

Are there any horribly big differences between the two?

Have a linux course coming up and the professor said we're going to be working on RedHat 7.2.. Seems way crazy to be using such an OLD version...

Or is this not so old?

It's old.. there's a newer version of the kernel and probably 90% of the programs that came with it.

That said, you could install RH7.2 and patch it up to the 9 level, but still.. that's messy.

Seems odd to be using such an old version, unless they have some software that won't work with the new versions for some odd reason.

Yes, it does seem odd. Perhaps the professor just doesnt want to move to a newer version. 7.2 is used quite frequently in webserver applications (though I dont know if it is because it was better or because its just been installed, and no one wants to take down their servers to upgrade).

Although, if he is teaching yall CLI stuff, it shouldnt matter, the command prompt hasnt changed much at all :)

By the way, there is no more Red Hat. It is now Fedora, Red Hat stopped supporting and producing their free product. Fedora is pretty much the same thing though. I actually installed it on an old machine last night, it works pretty well.

So I could probably install Fedora and be able to do anything she'd have us do at school on 7.2?

As long as its from the command prompt, I would suspect so. I might suggest trying to find and install a copy of 9.0 though, I dont know if anything changed when they went to Fedora from RedHat. Maybe someone can clarify this...

I recently installed a new version wo linux called gentoo. If you are needing some help with command line it will help. It doesn't have a GUI instalation. If you download the instructions and follow them step by step it is not hard to install. Take a look at http://www.gentoo.org

Yes, Gentoo has a CLI installer. It is *NOT* a distro for someone new to linux to install though. For the most part, I like it, but I wouldnt recommend it to anyone that doesnt know just what they are doing.

you might want to find out if the book he's using is for RH 7.2.

There might be some core differences....(e.g. not sure if it was 7.2 or 7.3 when RH made the switch to put apache in /var)
