Question about RAM
What if I put a stick of 512Mb RAM into a board that only supports 128Mb? The PC Im on is a Compaq Presario and it has a 900MHz AMD Duron processor. Its one of those PC that come all togeather for people who dont know anything about them. I looked at the hardware manager and under system board all it says is-
Device Type: System Devices Manufacturer: (Standard System Devices) Hardware Version: Not Available Im trying to use morpheus to download some files but it eats like 50 percent of my systems resources and I keep getting a blue screen. I have 3 sticks of 128Mb in there now. Is there a way to find out what this board will support? What happens if I just plug it in?

I doubt it will permanently damage your system if you stick in something it doesn't like.
My old Hewlett-Packard said the max RAM it could have was 256 MB, yet I had 384 in there for a good while.

More importantly, what OS are you using? If you are using Win 98 or one of it's ugly cousins, then they only support up to 128 MB anyway. If you are using an NT based system or Unix-based the ceiling is higher. Worse case if you put in something it can't handle then it will either not use it or it won't boot. Pretty simple.

Original question, try it and see, I have put 256MB into compaq's before and it registeres 128MB, and once it registered 64MB. Or as was posted before, the system wont boot or will beep.

My old K6-2 used 256 MB of RAM. I noticed a HUGE increase from 128 MB to 256 MB in Windows 98, even though I have heard of the "Windows only uses 128 MB" rumor.

If I remember correctly, win98 has a problem with using 1 GB or more of physical ram (you have to disable the cache that windows uses to use this amount of ram).

I have another question,,, my friend recently(yesterday actually) got some corsair xms ram w/ led lights (real fancy...) and put it in his new pc that he's makin w/ Athlon 64 3200+, Asus K8V Deluxe, SATA hdd, among other stuff... but when he put all the pieces together, he told me it wouldnt boot up.
He thinks its the RAM that's incompatible w/ the mobo.. Has there been past problems w/ XMS Ram from Corsair and his particular board? thanks

I've heard of Corsair ram being incompatible with some boards, especially the XMS series. It sounds like a compatibility problem to me! He can probably find out the info from Asus' or Corsair's website.
