Monitor refresh rate

What would be the best combo of screen res/refresh rate? Is this just a matter of personal choice?

I really like running my res at 1280 x 1024. But I can only get a refresh rate of 60 hertz, which gives me eye strain. Lower res I can different refresh rates.

also, is a higher refresh rate "better"?

Should I just get a better monitor?

It is personal choice for the most part.
The higher the refresh rate the easier on the eyes.
What sort on monitor do you have currently? 15"?

This is what I run:
Primary (Viewsonic E90fb): 1280x960 @ 80Hz 19"
Secondary (POS no name): 1024x768 @ 85Hz 15"

Even at 80 and 85Hz I still have problems, I mostly attribute these to a partially dead POS Viewsonic. :D

Well, Im running an LCD here at school, so there is no refresh rate to speak of, and resolution is fixed at 1024x768.

At home, I run both of my CRTs at 1280x1024 at 70hz refresh.

Shokan 02-14-2004 09:44 AM

I got a 17 Samtron. I can only run it at 60 hertz if i got 1280x1024

02-14-2004 10:52 PM

for me less than 70Hz = pounding headache!

Destrox 02-14-2004 10:57 PM

Guess i'm lucky, I've been running 1280x1024 @ 60hz for years now.

no strain, and my eyes have actually gotten better since my last eye visit they said.

But anyways, yes a *good* monitor should support 1280x1024 at 80Hz

propaganda 02-14-2004 11:50 PM

Wow that is a really bad refresh rate. I was running at 1280 x 1024 @ 75 hz for about 6 months then switched to 85hz. It was a very nice change too.

Lasereth 02-14-2004 11:58 PM

Damn, I suppose I'm weird. I've NEVER used a monitor with a refresh rate above 60 Hz. My current monitor is a 17" Generic at 1280*1024 at 60 Hz. My last monitor was a 15" at 1024*768, 60 Hz. All of my backup monitors are 60 Hz. :)

I guess you have to use a better refresh rate to actually tell the difference. Sorta like you have to watch DVDs for a while, then go watch a VHS to see how shitty they are. :) Oh well, I don't notice anything bad about my 60 Hz wonder, and until I do on a better one, I'm not upgrading.

i use 1280x1024 on a crt at 120Hz, and my lcd dosnt matter. Anything under 85 and it gives me a headache.

oberon 02-15-2004 01:36 PM

I use 1600x1200 or 1920x1080 @ 75Hz. I've tried 2048x1536 @ 75Hz before but it's just too dense for me. I can't tell the difference above 75Hz, and only slightly between 60 and 75.

It helps to have an extremely large monitor for such high resolutions/refresh rate combinations, however.

billege 02-15-2004 02:20 PM

The higher refresh rate, the better for your noggin. I couldn't look at a 60hz'er for more than a couple of minutes. Monitors are pretty cheap, start saving.

Prince 02-15-2004 02:34 PM

1024x768 @ 85 has always worked nicely for me.

Can't go higher with this monitor without dropping the refresh.

meembo 02-15-2004 06:47 PM

I can't deal with any rate below 75. Mice and keyboards and monitors seem to be a secondary concern for most PC users, but their use is what might contribute to real physical disabilities in the future. Get the best you can afford, in relation to the time you spend with the equipment!

SonicRL 02-15-2004 09:47 PM

I had mine running at 1152 x 864 at 60 hz and it really never bothered me. I just boosted it up to 75 hz and I can't find a difference between the 2.

JStrider 02-15-2004 10:32 PM

i run at 1280x960 at 70hz

i can actually see the flashing at 60hz... its really annoying....

and why do you guys use 1280x1024?
1280/1024=1.25
1280/960=1.3333333333333333333333333333333
1024/768=1.3333333333333333333333333333333
800/600=1.3333333333333333333333333333333
the 1280/1024 makes everything squished... whereas 1280x960 keeps the same aspect ratio of all the other resolutions...

Yes you could actually see the flashing and it leaves you crazy after running it at 75hz for a long time then going back down to 60hz.

1280 x 960 is just to large for my tastes. I guess I just got used to 1280 x 1024.

Hanabal 02-15-2004 11:03 PM

well my lcds default ratio is 1280*1024 so it works for me (75Hz by the way)

Jephree 02-15-2004 11:12 PM

I'm happy with:

CRT: 1280x960 @ 85Hz 19" Viewsonic PS790
LCD; doesn't really matter!

It depends I guess... x1024 became a sort of standard resolution, even on 4:3 displays so that's what everybody used. Just Because.
I guess it snowballed from there to what we see today.
I think running anything other than a 4:3 resolution on a 4:3 display is retarded.

I never noticed anything being squished on my LG 1710S. If I change the res to 1280x960 the picture looks all squished.

Gotenks 02-20-2004 06:04 AM

1280x1024 @ 60hz, never got a headache, but then again i've never tried anything higher.

bltzkriegmcanon 02-20-2004 08:43 AM

16*12 at 60 I believe. Doesn't bother me a bit on my 19" KDS.
