anyone have any GPS handheld recommendations? i'd like to use it primarily for navigation while driving.

a palm solution sounds okay but i'd rather have a dedicated unit.

The problem with the palm solutions is battery life. They dont last for squat. It *is* nice to have a screen that large though.

As for recommendations, just poke around for a unit that has support for maps (roads especially). Being able to program a route into is pretty important too. And the more memory, the better--you can put more maps into it.

I use a Magellan Meridian Platinum for my GPS/Geocacheing needs.

Here's a link to a overview http://gpsinformation.net/mgoldreview/mag-plat.htm
and here's a link to it's website

I've used it for about 14 months and would buy it again even with all the newer ones coming out.

I use a Garmin eTrex Camo . All though a bit basic on features, it has served we well and has decent battery life.
When hooked up to a laptop or PDA and Microsoft Streets and Trips (Windows) or GPS Drive (unix) it makes a great
navigational aid. It managed to get me around California/Nevada last summer, with only one missed turn (the road
signs were wrong, honest :) ).

If you are based in the US I would recommend looking for one that has WAAS support as this will get you a bit more
accuracy, than one with out

I've got an etrex Legend and it does the job quite well.

Whatever make you get, make sure it is run on a private GPS satellite. Most of the GPS units available run off of the army satellites, and during war times or national high awareness, you will not be able to use it as they jam all GPS frequencies. You may ask why they do this, and it is so the enemy cannot use GSP either. :)
