Ever wonder what happens if your heatsink were to fall off?

I posted this as a reply to another thread, but I think that it's educational.

This experiment was done to determine the effects of heatsink removal, be it accidential or intentional.

You be the judge.

Click this and download the movie.

While it's downloading go to this site.

The link for the movie is down.

The Tom's hardware page was quite interesting though. Kinda makes me nervous about having an Athlon processor now. Props to Intel for designing their processors so well. I just hope my heatsink never falls off! Damn it, I will probably be checking the thing every 5 minutes now.

Anyone got any ideas on how to make sure the heatsink will stay put if the socket breaks?

You shouldn't worry that much. Those are pretty old reviews and for the first AMD processor the HS wasn't even connected first of all and the second one seemed like it didn't want to come out even after they tried pulling on it.

My friend's heatsink fell off and his P4 lived, chugging along very very slowly. He had to pay 12 bucks to buy a replacement clip for the one that broke off his motherboard. I have no doubt that an AMD would burn up and die.

Yes, old movies from Tom's. However, the likelyhood of a heat sink falling off, is as likely as me making an NBA jump shot. I am 5'9", 165 lbs., so I am confident neither is going to happen.

I'll just quote myself from the other thread dealing with this:

Yeah, when it comes to processor reviews, you really have to look out on Tom's. They'll do a lot of interesting things to make it seem like Intel always wins. Every now and then they can't get around it, but usually they'll trick the readers into thinking that that Intel processors are *always* better. For instance, I've read a few reviews where Tom's will OC a P4 until it's better than the new AMD chip that came out, and then not change the color on the graph so it looks like a regular P4, just so the P4 is on top. Umm, the Athlon is at stock and the P4 is OC'ed...of course the P4 is gonna win.

Oh, and while those videos were pretty damn funny (I'm almost wondering if they were a joke ), nothing like that EVER happens. I've been a computer dork for years now, and I've never, not even ONCE heard of a heatsink fan simply falling off. If it does, it's your fault for installing it wrong. In that article, just about everything was completely biased without reasoning. Oh well, Tom's is a lot better in the more recent articles. Their videocard tests are VERY reliable as well.

I look at it this way, if a company is concernd enough about it's product to make sure that it doesn't cook itself, then that's the chip that I want.

Now that's just me, but I give props to AMD for creating a chip that is SO easy for us geeks to overclock and do with it what we will. That is awesome!

Yeah, if you wanna pay an extra 150 bucks to make sure that your dumb ass couldn't properly install a heatsink, then Intel is for you.

I'd prefer to save the 150 and take my chances. I could buy 2 athlon 2500+'s for the price on a PIV.

BTW, I have dumbass friends that have burned their Athlons because they were too stupid to put a heatsink on.

They went to the store, spent 40 bucks, stuck in a new chip w/ the heatsink, and overclocked it to high speeds w/ my help.

How fucking dumb do you have to be to leave a heatsink off, not turn off the power when you smell smoke, to actually burn the motherboard up?!?

Problem is, as soon as you smell smoke, the chip is already gone.
