AVG Antivirus Free Edition
Quick and simple question about the free version of AVG Antivirus. Is it kept up-to-date just as much as the pay versions of AVG and/or as much as programs like Norton and McAfee?
|
I'm rrunning it on my PC... installed it a week ago & updated it. there has been a patch since then, that i downloaded lsat night, so... I don't need real high security because a lot of time XP isn't even booted but.. it was nice to see that patch before i brought it onto a college campus and exposed it to other PC's ;)

NAI (owns McAfee) recently changed requirements for access to updates. According to their download page:

The free and the pro of AVG are no different for the actual virus scanning ability and updating of DAT's.
The pro offers more abilities overall tho, and the fact that you providing future funds to a business to make a better product. I my purchased AVG Pro after about a year of using the free edition. |
Destrox: is it subscribe like Norton, or just a 1 time thing?
|
Well, maybe if I use it enough and like it I'll purchase it, but I'm really not in Windows enough to pay for something I'll likely never even need. Just want to be sure that when I *am* in Windows I'm safe from the latest viruses.
Thanks for the help everyone. |
You purchase it for 2 year contract.
When i purchased it, it cost me $33.30, so... $15.15 a year, or $1.26 a month if you wanna make it look cheap. :P |
Is AVG Anti-virus free edition any good? Tired of having problems with norton and their prices.
|
I use and prefer AVG free, to norton and mcafee, I have licenced versions of both and use AVG... alot less overhead and it works just fine, and i have had some issues at work with Norton so we quit useing it, executives got pissed when it would not let them open word doc's, and had to take care of it quit....
|
So far, AVG seems great. I decided to take the plunge and try it out after getting frustrated at the overhead that both Norton and McAfee require. They're such system hogs. With AVG I have noticed no slowing down of the system. Only disadvantage I can see so far is that it doesn't appear to support e-mail scanning through anything other than Outlook.

Yeah I just ran AVG and the CPU never went over 30% which was really nice since Norton always went about 85%.
|
I have used it for the last four years...love the auto update feature...although it wakes me up sometimes at 5 in the morning doing its update download.....
have only had one problem...if I stay up late it kicks in on it's daily system check at 1am while I am online....just found out that I can keep surfing and it does not bother it at all... It really saved my butt a number of times this summer...I trust it completly....and IT IS FREE>>> |
Heh.. Thanks for telling us about it. I'll have to look into this because as propaganda mentioned, Norton takes up a lot of valuable resources.
|
I was using Norton for the longest time, and then switched to AVG a few months ago. I've never looked back. Good stuff, and, as others have mentioned, it's free. :)

Secretmethod, i love your new avatar. :)
Thought i'd just say that. |
AVG Free Edition is excellent. They update very frequently, and it just works. It hasn't missed anything so far.
