Overclocking graphic cards
I'm curious on how to overclock a graphic card. I just want to try it out. i heard you can clock the radeon 9800 to a pro speed. i have Saphire radeon 9800.. and i'm wandering what pro would be like. Probably not a good idea to do it for too long.. but just curous. any overclocker out there who knows how?

The only way you can overclock your graphics card is to use a GUI, Graphical User Interface. Meaning it has to be through your OS, like Windows. You can't do it with BIOS like you would your CPU. I would just find a nice program out there that is known for being able to successfully OC GPUs. I'm not sure if your ATI drivers will support over-clocking that well though.

Rage3D
That's what you need. Check out the link, and before you start to OC anything read! Look up some info to make sure you don't fry your card. Baby steps when overclocking. |

Typical "safe" increases start at 10%. I have found this to be true in my experiences. Of course, your milage may vary, but in general, it's a good idea. If you want to go nuts, start thinking about volt modding, and water cooling.

hmm i may have to try this, my secondary card is only a 16 meg ATI compared to my 64 meg primary card, it would be nice to try to close the gap so to speak

cool I'll have to try that when I get home from work, any Idea what will work with my ATI rage pro card?
|
hmm it says my ATI card isnt supported, :(

I have a 9800 non-pro. I flashed the bios to Pro Bios then used Rage 3D to overclock it. The 9800 non-pro's have the exact same architecture as the pro versions, ATI just gives the np's a different BIOS and sets the core/memory clock lower. I have had my 9800 up to 460/400 without artifacts, stock is 378/340, so yes overclocking a bit should be safe, but don't overdo it.
|
ChrisJericho, i'm in the same situition. can you give me details on how you did it? As i said, i have a non-pro. i want to try clocking it to pro. thanks

Do you want to JUST overclock it or flash the bios as well?
|
i think i'm just going to overclock it. is it hard to flash the bios?
|
My ATI (9800 AIW Pro) doesn't offer overclocking. My GeForce (5900FX Ultra 256) does, however, the screen always asks if you "really want to do this?" Most times, no problem. My thought on this is, why do I need to overclock? The card screams, the puter follows suit.

For overclocking download Rage3D from www.rage3d.com . The program is very easy to use you shouldn't need any help.
If you want to flash the BIOS as well here is a how-to guide from the rage 3d forums. http://www.rage3d.com/board/showthre...eadid=33695811 Keep in mind that while it works for 90% of people, there is always a chance that something could go wrong and you will be left with a dead card. But as long as you follow the directions everything should be fine. |
