What is the closest that you've gotten to FUBAR-ing your system without actually screwing it up?

I've recently had an experience where i almost wrote something on to NTFS from linux!

i dont think it has screwed me up too much .

so, what are your stories?

Well it said in the instructions to not install 98-se over the top of the current windows, but to delete it and reinstall completly........
what they did not say was that it would also delete most of the program files...which just happened to have a bunch of my digital pictures that were not backed up on Iomega discs...

I thought that damn machine would never stop deleting stuff...
and then it took several hours for it to reload...

found some shareware on the net and was able to retrieve most of the jpgs that I lost---the rest were wrote over....

such is life..

I wasn't paying attention and formatted the wrong hard drive once.

I lost all my music along with every single paper I'd written in high school and half my college career.

My computer spontaneously combusted last year. My brother caught it before it fried everything. I took it apart and found the motherboard half melted. The computer still worked. I guess that's why I call it a close shave. I sent the mobo back to Gigabyte and they fucking soldered new chips onto it and sent the melted mobo right back to me. I'm still running it now, almost a year after it happened.

Picture this. About x years ago I bought a brand new Pentium 200 MMX. In this smoking machine I put in a removable hard drive caddy, which I never locked because power lights on the computer itself and the caddy would generally tell me 'Don't pull this out, stupid'

Unfortunatly it didn't tell my wife.

I wasn't home and she and her friend were using my computer (!). Her friend asked her what that caddy thing was so my wife pulled it out.

Win NT wasn't pleased.

It was crazy, I saw a glare off his monitor (orange looking shades I guess) and I ran over to his computer and it was on fire in the inside. He has a plexi-glass window on the side (see-through), and the computer was aflame with the CPU fan still gyrating and throwing the flames everywhere I unplugged the computer and burnt the SHIT out of my index finger, but the fire stopped right then. Looked like one of the chips burst and caught on fire. I was scared shitless

hmm, i had a pretty close call with an almost total system crash from installing one version of Catalyst for my video card. I mega-fucked my system, and I was getting a constant barrage of Write-Delay-Fail error messages. It was annoying as piss. I just did the good old system restore. It was pretty bad.

Well I have formatted the wrong drive a few times, nothing major just lost a few things I had wanted. The REALLY close call was when I put a AGP 1x Card into my AGP 2x Slot (the paper that came with my video card SAID it was 2x compatible and even the connectors on the bottem were correct but after searching there site found it was only 1x, 3.3v) Anywho, after putting it in and trying to boot my system, nothing happened, I was like "Maby I just never seated it perfectly" so off I go to take the card out, without removing the power cuz it was going to be such a quick job. And what happens? The fucking thing turns on in the middle of me removing it from the AGP slot, I see a blue spark come from the Video card to the mobo and thats when my heart hit my stomach. The system was a brand new P4 2.53, 1gb RAM, 580gb worth of HDD Space, a $1500 Capture Card, DVD Burner, And a $200 sound card, And the only thing that fried was my Power header on my mobo making it so I cant turn the power off now, LOL As soon as I plug it in, the fans start spinning, and the HDDs power up, then I hit the power button and it POSTs, then when I shut down, it just gets to the last, I hear my System drive power down and then everything still runs. I am some dame glad that thats all that happened, cuz I had just paid over $5000 for the whole system. Scarest day of my life.
