I'm just wondering what kind of proportion of you have made the step to XHTML .

Well as the World wide web consortium started recommending XHTML instead of HTML 4.01 in 1999, I've been using it ever since.

XHTML strict. But I haven't coded recently I must admit.

I have some long-term projects that I should be continuing, and they are and probably will stay XHTML 1.0 Strict

I'm lazy so what little web stuff I do is HTML (standard at least).

So what is the diff and why should I use XHTML (aside from W3C)?

html, but I stick to the w3 standards... XHTML is HTML that follows the XML standards, correct? so no tags that don't close, nesting has to be done correctly... we have a book on it juan

If cheerios' description is accurate, then, with the exception of some standalone tags - IMG and META tags being the only ones I can think of - Yeah, I do that. If it's a container, I treat it as such.

There's also <br>, <hr> etc which turn into <br /> <hr /> respectively. All attributes are to surrounded by brackets, alt attributes are to be included in all <img /> tags, no capitals are to be used.

The advantages are the code is tidier, and it's easier to read (am I forgetting any?). When combined with CSS layout techniques you get very light code which is great for page load time and for search engine optimisation.

I myself code in XHTML 1.0 Strict, I might get round to learning what 1.1 is one day.

I use HTML.

I'll learn XML when I think it's necessary. So far I haven't seen any real benefits.

Without a doubt I just HTML, however, without knowing what xHTML is other than the descriptions in the prior posts, then I'm very close to xHTML code. I don't know XML, but the standards listed I follow very strictly, except the capital letters thing, which depends on my mood. But I think I'll have to do some research into that standard.

I use XHTML when it suits me. I dont know how to use it that well, but sometimes it just works out. I always code in standards compliant code though, no matter what I am using.

I use XHTML mostly just because it's much tidier - plus is makes me cooler then everyone else who's learning html in school now.

IIRC, the only real difference between HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.0 are some deprecated tags. There are no additions.

?

In essence XHTML 1.0 combined with CSS is a re-specification of HTML, continuing the evolution to a cleaner web with data and markup seperated.
XHTML when used appropiately is compatible with HTML 4.01 browsers.

I use HTML, and just the other day started learning CSS, so I feel spiffy again...
Nah, making webpages isn't my thing, so I'm not probably going to go out and learn the newest webpage making standard, whether its html/xhtml/xml/dhtml/whatevertml.
