Running w/o fans.
Ok, here's the deal
i bought 2 system fans for my case, unfortunately, nether of them would reach the plug on the mobo. so, i ordered the 3to4 pin adapters to hook it up to the power supply. it'll take 3-4 days (excluding weekends) to get here. i the mean time, i'll get all the rest of the stuff for the pc. would it be a risk to start the thing off w/o the 2 fans? i have an athlon xp 2000+ proc which has it's own heat sink and fan. power supply has it's own fan. and i have one side fan on the case, which luckily hooks up to power supply. so, should i take the risk and run the thing?

Just monitor the CPU temperature. You should be fine. It's not recommended, but you could temporarily open the side of your case. It should allow a bit more circulation than with it closed. In normal situations (with case fans) this actually is worse than having the side panel on.

ive thought it would be pretty cool to have a computer system that had no fans... use that Zalman heatsink on the processor... you could cut big vents into the bottom and top of the case... so that the hot air rises out and sucks cooler air in thru the bottom... i dont know how well this would work...you might have to end up getting some super quiet 120 mm fans to lay on the bottom blowing up...

As mentioned before, as long as you have a decent heatsink and CPU fan, you should be fine without case fans. However, the ambient temperature will remain high and you might want to leave the case open until you get some case fans. DO NOT RUN THE COMPUTER WITH A FAN ON THE HEATSINK.

I run a 2Gig Athalon with ou tthe case fan. The case fan will just increase the LONG term life of your components, so week shouldn't hurt them much if any. If you case feels like you could cook eggs on it, you may want to reconsider.
It prob doesn't matter to you anymore but I believe HSF = Heat Sink Fan. An enjoyable game for all the kids to play. Start up your system with our a heat sink or heat sink fan. An Iwill mother board I bought tied in the fan in a strnage way so when I was just trying to debug why the durn system wasn't Self Testing. Long story short...too much current went to the CPU and in less than a second I started seeing the smoke inside the chip start to come out for me too see it and smell it. |

it was probably a typo...
with most heatsinks it would be fatal to run the computer without a fan on the heatsink... but i dont have a fan... i dont even have a heatsink... my waterblock works very well... :-D

you realy dont need case fans, but they are nice to have, the cooler you can get your CPU the faster it runs but just make sure its under 130F and your fine

Well, case fans are important depending on the hardware installed, and the placement of the machine. The <a href="http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20010917/heatvideo-05.html#download_the_first_toms_hardware_test_lab_video">HSF</a> is extremely important!
No case fan is silly. You need cooling if you have a modern, high performance processor. Your power supply, ram, drives, video card, all need cooling (fans). Only an inexperienced person would advise you to negate the case fans. Oh, the person that might opt for that option, probably has the side off the case, and blowing a room fan onto the mobo while they chow on ramen noodles and search for porn. |

Poof, how'd you know??? Sorry, I'm to poor to be able to afford any fans, and I know they are only a couple bucks, but again, I'm to poor. Just as a question, what's wrong with running a room fan on the motherboard, seeing as everyone is saying, "DON'T DO IT!"

More detailed explention: the importance of case fans depends HIGHLY on the components of the computer.
Basic rules: 1. NEVER run a comp without a HSF. Fatal. Some P4s/Celeys can run with only a high-performance heatsink, but even that is iffy. HSF is not something you want to skimp on. 2. Athlons create a metric shitload more heat than P4s. If you have an Athlon, case fans are highly reccommended, as the higher CPU temps will raise the ambient temps quite a bit. 3. Newer, faster HDDs and especially Video cards are the other main heat sources, and need to be properly cooled. In the end, cooling depends on what kind of a computer you're running. Someone with an AthlonXP and a high-end video card would not dream of running a comp without proper cooling. Somone with a low-end P4 and basic video hardware might well decide to have no case cooling at all, and never suffer consequences. If your computer is a lower spec system, case fans are only going to raise the sound level. Lowering a proc/case temp 3 or 4 degrees C is not going to affect performance or part life if those temps are already at acceptable (<40 degrees) levels, you're just going to make yourself deaf. If you have a higher-end comp and are planning on running only for a few days/weeks without proper case cooling, I say there's little risk. Long term you may see problems as the heat stresses the components, but in the short term nothing is going to burn out/die from heat unless you A) don't have a properly installed HSF; B) have faulty stock cooling on things like video cards; and C) live in the middle of the sahara.
