External USB DVD writer not being recognized properly
So I got myself an Iomega Super DVD writer. It's external and connects via USB. After installing the bundled software, I plug in the drive to a USB port, then Windows (XP) has a message pop up, saying it's found new hardware. It detects the drive as a USB 2.0 Storage Device, and asks whether it should search for a driver on its own, or whether I would like to specify one. Iomega says that I should tell it to search on its own, as the drivers are embedded into Windows XP.
However, Windows says it is unable to find the right drivers. I've tried numerous times, rebooting, uninstalling the software they gave me, tyring again, then reinstalling the software, etc, Nothing has worked... And none of the disks that came with the drive have a driver on it, and Iomega claims that the driver does not exist in the form of a separate file they can give me. Windows should just be able to detect it. They recommend updating my USB controller drivers, but I haven't been able to find any. And it seems to me that the problem is simply that I don't have the proper drivers for the DVD drive on my system, for whatever reason. So... the drive is fine, the USB controller is fine... windows just doesn't know how to talk to the drive. Try as I might, Windows only sees a generic "USB 2.0 Storage Device," and I'm unable to do anything with it. I've gotten the drive to work fine on another computer. And I've tried different USB ports on this computer... bleh, any suggestions? other info: Windows XP (recently Windows Updateified) Sony VAIO laptop, using SiS 7001 USB controllers
