Windows XP Pro Printer Password Protection.
Title basically explains it. I would like password protection on my printer. Connected thru USB, and also would like password when shared thru network.
Where in XP Pro does it let you manage your shares? The sharing in control panel doesnt allow you to do anything. I remember seeing something about that on screensavers (tv show), they're was a small program run which is bundled with xp that allows you to edit user shares. For password protection from the computer its physically connected too, thats where im stumped. Any ideas folks? Reason for this, my sister is a cheap sake and wont buy ink for her printer, and I know she is printing stuff while im gone. But have no proof to accuse her of anything. |
You can't password protect the printer but you can change the user groups that can use it.
Assuming she is in the group called Users, simply change the permissions on the printer to something like Power Users or Administrators (assuming your account is one of those). Right-click the printer icon in Printers and Faxes (or wherever the damn thing is located...) and select the Security tab. Remove the group Everyone and/or Users. Make sure that Admins and/or Power Users is listed. If other folks in your house need to print to it, you'll need to create a new group for them, and assign the new group to the pinter security, or place those users into Power Users or Admins. Personally, I would create a new group for users that you do and don't want to use the printer. |
Hmm, see thats the problem, I cant find where I manipulate what shares are available to who.
When going into the printer properties, there is no security tab, only a sharing one, and from within there, all I can select is either share, or dont share. And give it a share name. |
You're using FAT32, aren't you?
The security option will only be available with NTFS. Windows 9x used to have a password-protect option on the share but I'm not sure about XP when using FAT32. |
Its there. Can't remember where, but it is there. Conversion to NTFS an option for you?

And in the sharing tab, thats all that is there. Isnt there another place besides the User control panel to change window shares, and in the 'manage' section when right clicking on My Computer. |
Go into the printers folder, right click on the printer and select properties. Click on the security tab. Remove your sister from the user list or remove the group she belongs to.

Are you using XP's "Simple file sharing" because it hides the security tab. Try this to activate the security tab...
Open My Documents Select Tools | Folder Options... Select View tab Scroll to the bottom and uncheck "Use simple file sharing" Click OK This will enable the security tab in all instances where it applies. |
awesome..
