How do you connect two computers together?

how is it done? i don't have much experience in this sort of thing, so i was wondering if there are any members of these forums who know how to do it?

Numerous ways of doing this. Can you give us a little more information?

What OS are your computers running. Do they have network cards, usb ports? Where will the computers be located, next to one another or in different rooms.

Yes, what are you trying to do?

The easiest way is probably to network them together. Its not a very hard task. But, like sipsake said, we need more info.

all I will say at this point is if you're connect with NICs then make sure they are 10/100, which most these days are. And if it's only 2 PCs don't bother with a router. Get yourself a crossover cable and just plug the 2 NICs together. If you want internet access between the two just get analogX's Proxy program. Works a treat for me when I gotta download updates and patches for my headless system.

Oh and if you are gonna run a headless (no monitor) system get yourself one of the many flavors of VNC. I use TightVNC myself.

Yeah, VNC's a great program. Though if the machines are going to sit side by side you can you might want to invest in a KVM switch. I use one on my two computers and it works great.

vnc is free, kvm switches cost money :)

Hope the poster gets back and elaborates more on his/ her intentions..
The easiest way i know to connect 2 PC's together is duct tape and some epoxy.

Mmmmm..networking..

True...true...

However, you can get a 2-port KVM for under $40 and as much as I switch back and forth, it was well worth the money.

Duct tape and epoxy! heheheh... I'll remember that the next time my boss wants me to "connect" his computer to another. :)

Alright these computers are going to be in separate rooms. I don't really want to spend too much money on network cards etc. The OS of my friends computer will be 98 for his slower computer, and will probably be windows xp professional for his new computer. For me, it will be windows xp professional sp1 on both computers.

First of all each computer must already have a network card, or they couldn't hook to teh internet...... unless your motherboard has a hookup built in. I expect what you really want is for all four computers to have internet access..... and be able to 'talk' to each other. What you need is a router, and enough cable to reach each computer...... depending how far they are apart it should cost around $100. Or you could go wireless but that would probally cost more. Networking them together is easy.

Oh, You might have to buy network cards if say..... the old 98 machine has a dialup modem and you're going to DSL or Cable, each machine has to have the same hookup.... either all dialup or all DSL/Cable.

I have one cable modem that's hooked to a Linksys router that splits four lines to four computers....... all networked together, they all run XP Pro though. I haven't messed with 98 for so long I have no idea how well it will network with XP.

Ill second that. I just bought one from Newegg for thirty-something dollars. Best money I ever spent.
