Opinions on Lindows
Has anyone here experimented with or use Lindows? How does it compare with other Linux distros? Is it all hype?
Any comments positive or negative would be appreciated. |
I didn't like it. It's basically a bastardized KDE sitting on top of a castrated kernel. I'm not a linux expert but I know enough to say don't waste your time with lindows...get yourself the latest SuSE or better yet Knoppix. If you need to install it get SuSE and then get Crossover Office to emulate windows programs but unless you *have* to use Office or something MS then there are many good Linux alternatives and almost all are freeware.

<-- terrified of lindows. Think of it this way.
Grandma goes to walmart and buys a 50 buck computer w/ Lindows. then calls you, Joe-Windows, when something breaks. ...now what? ;) If you want to learn Linux, SuSe is nice, Debian is nicer (in my opinion), and RedHat is also friendly (yes, I know it's gone, but there's gotta be some .iso's around). |

Lindows is Windows + Linux - inux.
It's got pretty much nothing in terms of core UNIX apps (gcc, make, etc.), unless you go and pay to download from them (note: this is going on old information, from a year ago when my parents tried it out). If you want to run Linux, download SuSE or Debian - try them out. Redhad or Mandrake if you really want, but I try to avoid those. If you want to run Windows, run that. Don't run Lindows. |
If you want to experiment with a linux distro, my opinion is Lindows is not the place to start.
Like Pragma said, lindows = windows + linux - inux. Try a distro that you can actually experience linux in, not a disgused version. |
Everyone here has pretty much said it all. Lindows is no good. And last I knew, like someone just mentioned earlier, they charged you to download things that are free anywhere else. Not to mention that they sell "antivirus" software for Linux, which is totally unnecessary.
This is a company run by a dishonest guy with dishonest goals. |

I had the feeling Robertson was all hype. It seems he's just trying to make a quick buck by selling other people's ideas. It's good to hear the view is shared by others. Thanks to you all. |
Well, let's put it this way. Antivirus software is so necessary for Linux that I've heard reports of both Norton and McAfee fabricating virus threats for Linux.
Not to mention that if you REALLY want antivirus software for Linux, it's available for free rather than paying Lindows for their version. |
add to the fact if you're smart and don't run as root most viruses don't have much to get ahold of to fuck up anyway. Linux forces you to think more like an admin than just a guy who dloads porn all day. ;)

Take AOL and Linux and get them really drunk.
Now take their fetal-alcohol-syndrome ridden kids and there you have it! Lindows! |

I wouldn't mind trying Lindows, although I believe it's closed-source and it's a good idea to try and support open-source projects. It'd just be interesting to see how it all works. I'm guessing I'd go back to a normal Linux distro pretty quickly. |
