Help! Windows restarts on boot - Tilted Forum Project Discussion Community

Every time i load up windows, it reboots while it's at the windows xp screen.

it does the same when i try to access safe mode / dos prompt.

i popped in the xp disc and ran chkdisk /p in there and on the next load, it loaded up fine.

i'm now afraid to reboot the computer!

. is this the virus or something wrong with the hd?

ffirst whats chkdsk /p? you mean /f ?

something was probably corrupted, there should be a log of it somewhere, backup anything you need and reboot, you are going to have to sooner or later

I would try a repair install if you've got a winxp cd. It would leave all of your programs and other files but will basically fix all of the system files.

We had a similer problem when the nVidia driver went ape shit and kept crashing XP (which causes the reboot). So we removed the video card and used the integrated shit on the mobo which forced the driver to drop out and stopped the crashing.

Worth a shot I'd guess....

note: uninstalled nVidia drivers. conflict most likely occurred from not-fully uninstalled ATI drivers before the nVidia ones were installed.
