Router Help

I just moved out of my parent's house and into my own apartment. For some reason I can't get my Linksys router to work. Do I need to reconfigure it? If so, what do I need to change?

Do you have the broadband account already set up at your apartment? It's usually pretty straightforward if you do. Just plug the broadband into the router, and the router goes to the PC(s). Or into the hub if you have one. Windows XP usually autoconfigures your Internet settings if you plug into a router.

You probably need to "activate" the router through the IP address given for it at your apartment. I'd dig through the router instructions; it should give you an IP to go to in order to "start it up."

Sorry for the vague instructions, but there's not a whole lot you can do unless we know every little detail about it. :( You can always call the ISP and router manufacturer...that's how I solve some problems with my router. One last ditch effort is to make sure DHCP is enabled on your PC. Good luck!

in some cases you do have to set up the router with a user account and password, but this is getting less and less common, as more companies give plug and play connections with auto dhcp.

Well, here are some basic fundamental questions you need to answer. Some of them may appear obvious, but we have to start at the beginning.

1) Does your grandparents' house have broadband?
2) If so, is it with the same ISP as you had?
3) Do they have their own account, or did you "move" yours?

You can't simply unplug your router in one house and plug into another house and hope it works fine (well, not always).

Mr Mephisto

PS - What model Linksys box?

1)My grandparents are dead.
2)Yes it is the same isp i.e. comcast.
3)I moved my account.

Opps...

I guess I should have read your original post a bit more clearly.

Have you contacted Comcast and told them that you have moved your account to the new address?
