networking question
 

ok this one is a bit complex

my computer has 3 metwork interface cards.

two 3com and one netgear

and my net works consists of 1 linksys router (4 port + uplink), and 1 linksys hub(5 port +1 uplink)

the hub's uplink is plugged into the router (non uplink) and it works just fine


here is the question.

the IP's of my cards are confusing me.

i want to know why one of the cards is 169.254.233.190 instead of the logical 192.168.1.102

my router starts passing out ip's at 192.168.1.100

any ideas?

169.254.* is Microsoft's IP block for network interfaces that are set to use DHCP but are unable to pick up an address. They "need" an address, but can't get one dynamically assigned to them, so the firmware generates an IP in that range and assigns itself to it.

hmm 2 of the cards are geting an ip assined by the router. but one is not.

any idea of why?

What are you trying to do? Are you aware that unless you're into advanced routing (which it sounds like you aren't) that having an IP address from the same subnet on different network cards is A Bad Thing? This confuses your computer on how to actually route.

You won't get triple the throughput just by plugging the 3 nic's into your DSL router (or switch).
