help with links to windows updates??
hi
i'm interested in downloading some of the major windows xp updates, but outside of the proper windows update program. i would love to have these permanently saved on my comp for when i reinstall, so i don't have to wait for w.u. to dl the files every time. i have found a couple of things on the M$ support pages, but am hoping that somebody has a nice collection of links to some/any of the biggies: SP1, bigger security bundles for IE, etc... thanks! |
Are you unable to find them at http://download.microsoft.com? I'm pretty sure you can d/l the main files that way, unless they have changed the set up.
Here, hopefully this will help .. http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en |
ok, thanks for that second link. one question though - when you do the sp1 express from windows update, it downloads that (approx) 1.8mb file, then connects to another server and downloads some huge-ass set of files to do the actual install.
am i remembering this right? any way to get those other files? sorry if i sound like a lazy ass, i just honestly have had trouble searching that windows download site! |
kind of same thing with directx9, it downloads a smaller file, which seems to manage a second, much larger download.

i found an interesting one called sp1a for IT professionals, which is 128mb(!!)
think that one would be any good to dl?? would take me for-fricking-ever on this dial-up :( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...DisplayLang=en |
How could we get it to you afterwards?
|
that "network install" version (for IT professionals) is the one you want. DX9 has a similar package...sp1a would take you about 9 hours to d/l if you connect at 33.6
|
i might grab it overnight or something. i figure it will take about 7 hours if it averages 5kbps. :(((((((((((((((((((

thx y'all |
yah I just have all my updates for XP/2000 burned to a cd so i don't have to worry about grabbing 'em again...
also, there's a command-line tool from microsoft called hfnetchk that will tell you what updates your system needs...then you can download them individually from download.microsoft.com i probably use that more than windows update... also remember, that after you get sp1a you should run windowsupdate again to get the more recent patches, but your required downloads will be much smaller. keep those systems patched ;) |
