A Freezing Problem

My computer has this little problem of Freezing up whenever it feels like it, I mean the whole damn system just comes to a halt and Alt Ctrl Del doesn't do anything. I have to shut my computer down by holding in the power button.

I don't have the slightest clue of what is causing this.

This is what I am Running:

XP Pro

492 Megs of Ram

20 gig harddrive

Any help/Suggestions are appreciated, Thanks.

Sounds like it might be a heat issue, see if your fans on your CPU, and GPU are working. if they are go into your bios and look at what your cpu temp is after your computer crashes, you can also download motherboard monitor to look at cpu temp while in windows.

When you turn your computer on it should say something like:

'Press DEL to enter startup'

Press the Delete key (the little square one above your arrow keys) to get into your BIOS

The temperature listings will very probably be in 'Pc Health Status' or something similar

Could you tell us what type of processor you have - And also where you got your PC from - Did you buy it from somewhere or did someone make it for you (if you brought it from HP or Dell or similar it should not be having heat issues)

That is my exact setup and I have the same problem, is your computer by any chance a Compaq Evo N115?

I have seen that some older computers (gateways, I think) use either F1 or F2 to enter the BIOS. Delete is the most common one, in my experience, but some motherboards use different keys.

Actually it is a Compaq but it's a presario...And these problems have only been happening recently..

I am gonna try the start up thing and hit del or something, I think it has to do with a heat issue...I hope.

I have an AMD 700 mhz Processor, I know that AMD's are famous for running hot..But like I said, I just started having this problem recently.

I forgot to mention..I went to my fathers place for a BBQ today for a few hours. I shut my computer down, It's seems fine now...But before I left my computer had been on for over 24 hours.

I know this isn't a bright thing to do, But I took my case and put it on the floor where my feet go with the case cover off leaning against the case, Hopefully this will give it some more air to keep it cool.

Before it was in the little cubby hole where it is meant to be.

I hope this solves the problem, Cause earlier today I felt like throwing it out the window.

My compaq laptop uses F10 to get into the bios if you haven't found a way in yet it might be worth a try...
