FOLD for the TFP!!!!!

Quote:

What are proteins and why do they "fold"?
Proteins are biology's workhorses -- its "nanomachines." Before proteins can carry out their biochemical function, they remarkably assemble themselves, or "fold." The process of protein folding, while critical and fundamental to virtually all of biology, remains a mystery. Moreover, perhaps not surprisingly, when proteins do not fold correctly (i.e. "misfold"), there can be serious effects, including many well known diseases, such as Alzheimer's, Mad Cow (BSE), CJD, ALS, and Parkinson's disease.

What does Folding@Home do?
Folding@Home is a distributed computing project which studies protein folding, misfolding, aggregation, and related diseases. We use novel computational methods and large scale distributed computing, to simulate timescales thousands to millions of times longer than previously achieved. This has allowed us to simulate folding for the first time, and to now direct our approach to examine folding related disease.

genka 04-19-2003 07:41 AM

I joined... Is that good?

Macheath 04-19-2003 10:41 AM

Wow, this is creepy.

In my pining for the TFP in the final *hours* before its ressurrection, I wandered over to folding to check out the teams and see if TFP had one.

Sure enough, there she was and I proudly punched in my new team number!

Unfortunately, I had only then just started a new workunit so I won't get on the list for some hours.

Triseph 04-19-2003 10:43 AM

Ill sign up, 1158 is no place for tfp!

Banginblaz 04-19-2003 12:26 PM

We need more people!!!!!!! we lost 2 on the past week, what gives?!?!??!?!

juanvaldes 04-19-2003 12:35 PM

And remember to CHANGE YOUR NAME.

Fob_Magi 04-19-2003 02:31 PM

I'll try and do it again.. but my mom always fucking uses my comp and shuts it down so no folding ever gets done...

labob 04-21-2003 12:30 AM

I'm there...

Let the folding begin !

b1m2x3 04-26-2003 10:36 PM

BUMP.
comeon guys show your pride!

poof 04-26-2003 10:43 PM

No. My pride is elsewhere. Family, children, myself. Leaving my 'puter on so someone can access it, well, no way.

But, you have a nice day.

methodtim 04-27-2003 04:38 AM

Sorry, my CPU cycles have been claimed by Seti. How about a TFP Seti team? I hear forming a SETI team is like the 5 th Level of Geek Purgatory.

Sionide 04-27-2003 06:06 AM

bah it never worked for me :( couldn't get the folding client to work, me and a mate tried everything, i guess my comp is just too shitty... ah well

Banginblaz 04-27-2003 06:12 AM

Hey, we just broke 1000 (we are 975 currently)out of over 32000, I think that means something (what I am not sure) but to go any further, we need more users!! Not that I really care, I just wanna be in the top 100, but It'll never happen. Although I am sitting in 9463 out of over 150000, so I am proud of something.....

WhenMuffinsAtak 04-27-2003 06:20 AM

I feel stupid, how do I join the TFP's team? step by step..

Banginblaz 04-27-2003 06:27 AM

d/l the app, then in team # put in 31697, and make sure you change your Name to reflect your board name.

The place to put that info will pop up the first time you use it. After that, left-click the icon in the systray to bring up the prog, and right-click anywhwere in the window to bring up the settings menu. (or you can just right-click the icon, but I like to watch the file working)

portwineboy 04-30-2003 06:49 PM

Everytime I log in on my Mandrake laptop it just keeps asking for username/team number over and over again. haven't had time to figure it out. I'll be adding a second processor to the team this weekend regardless tho. Rank is 846, maybe you'll get that 100 Bangin.

bubbaspike 04-30-2003 07:40 PM

I just folded some protein up in a tissue. Would you like it?

Halx 04-30-2003 09:34 PM

I'll help ya out

SecretMethod70 04-30-2003 09:38 PM

lucky for you foldingathome was in Gentoo portage, otherwise I'd have been too lazy to get it ;) I'll help out :)

krazykemist 05-01-2003 04:23 AM

If I could only catch up to you b1m2x3. Guess I'll have to put it back on the work machines again :D
Im doing good to stay ahead of PortWineBoy.

Fallon 05-01-2003 06:35 AM

I tried to fold, but it'd crash my computer(linux, and it'd kick me outta my account, and put me back at the login screen)
Sorry. Maybe Flieaway will let me put it on her computer...

chodarama 05-01-2003 06:58 AM

okay, i'm in. i've got a spare dual xeon server just sitting around.

Boner 05-03-2003 11:23 PM

I had four machines folding last week, but I ended up pulling the faster two (AthlonXP 1800 and 2000). This revealed that my 1800 has inadequate cooling, because my processor was approaching 90 degrees. On top of that, my office temperature was increasing significantly!

My two 300MHz boxes keep plodding along though.

goddfather40 05-04-2003 06:59 PM

I'm in as well with my ever more obsolete Celeron 700 MHz :)

Team ranking up to 771 by the way.

cheerios 05-04-2003 09:57 PM

w00t go guys! :D
here's a link to our team page, so y'all can see how we're doin':

Antagony 05-05-2003 01:42 AM

Cool, I'll be adding two computers to this mess soon :)

cheerios 05-06-2003 12:23 AM

thanks Antagony! :)

b1m2x3 05-06-2003 02:37 AM

wow....banginblaz has about 80 wu's... compared to my 18 :(

good job man... you are insane

Banginblaz 05-06-2003 04:33 AM

Ahem 91

It helps that I have 7 computers working. Only 3 pump them out though.... The rest are old slow machcines that only do 1 unit every 7-9 days or so.

clamburglar 05-07-2003 07:27 PM

Crap! I suggested this like back in October. All I got was a "Huh?".

Now (then, also) I'm folding for the #15-ish team and I've installed the client stealthily (with Firedaemon) on every PC I've built in the last six months (for that team - 10688, Team Sudhian).

Let me know if you want higher performance tips... Like the "-advmethods" and "-forceasm" tags.

The sweetest fruit is installing it on your PC's at work without anyone noticing - but be sure you're not gonna get into trouble.

One guy on the 10688 team has a farm of about 30 Athlon XP2100's running in a rack system. Crazy.

By doing that you're violating their license agreement on the Folding client.

Restrictions:
You may use this software on a computer system only if you own the system or have the permission of the owner

Be careful, there have been cases when people have gotten into big trouble for installing distributed.net in a similar manner, even getting into legal trouble.

Please take notice of Boner's post above. People have gotten into some heftly legal trouble from universities for doing the same with distributed.net

Anyways, please tell us some options to increase performance :)

clamburglar 05-08-2003 02:45 PM

Not on any work PC's, mind you. Just systems I build and fix for free, and I use the graphical client, so they can shut it down. I tell them what it is, and so far, it appears everyone's still running it. I don't think any of my buddies would take me to court, but thanks for the concern:)

OK, performance tips...

When you create a shortcut (always good to put it in your "Startup" folder) to the graphical client or the text-only console, right-click the icon and go to Properties.

In the "Target" field, you should see something like:

"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe"

Add the following tags to the end as shown below - be sure to include the space before each hyphen.

"C:\Program Files\Folding@Home\winFAH.exe" -advmethods -forceasm

The " -advmethods" tag signals the server that you have an advanced system and it will make you eligible to receive the Gromacs core work units, which are usually worth a lot more and fold considerably faster than the default Tinker core work units. The boost is very noticable on Pentium4 systems.

The " -forceasm" tag forces your system to use the SSE instruction set for much more efficient folding. I believe without this tag, sometimes the SSE can become disabled.

To run an almost completely invisible client, check out a program called Firedaemon, which allows you to set up F@H (or any other program) as a service under Windows XP (no-go on 9x).

Antagony 05-08-2003 03:08 PM

I am a crazy folding fool.

Got it up and running on both my workstation and server box.

Antagony 05-08-2003 03:12 PM

Hey, I have a question. On my Windows machine, I have both the screensaver installed and the stand-alone client.

When my screensaver activates, I should essentially be doing twice as much folding, right?

clamburglar 05-08-2003 03:38 PM

No, only one client can run at a time, unless you configure separate clients to run on a multi-processor machine.

Kill one of the two.

Fallon 05-29-2003 03:14 PM

Got the folding going on on my moms computer, so hopefully her blazing fast 266 will help a bit. =p

Tanerax 05-29-2003 03:17 PM

I will install and join using both my computer later this after noon... I want to see tfp as Number One....

Banginblaz 06-01-2003 06:27 AM

CLEAR!!!!

***PUMPH***

Beep-beep

beep-beep

I needed to revive this post, we made it to 514th, and we can do so much better.

What happened to all you people? Ah well......

portwineboy 06-13-2003 10:49 PM

When I last checked, team ranking was 475. This is an amazing performance on the part of TFP members.

I've said it before, I'll say it again.

Fold you bastards, fold!

:)
