USB Device Detection in WinXP

I have an issue that only XPSP1 will apparently fix, however, due to the performance implications of installing said service pack, I am hesitant to do so.

Anyway, the issue is this:

Any USB device that is not plugged into my machine at boot-time will not be detected by the OS. This has only started occurring since XP Professional was loaded on the machine. The USBs are 2.0 and XP Pro is loaded on a 2.3 GHz Toshiba Satellite (originally had XP Home.)

My question is this...has anyone else had this problem? If so, what is the solution (other than SP1?)

If ther eisnt a solution, does anyone know when SP2 will be released?

Thanks!

What's wrong with installing SP1?

You can *try* finding the motherboard/chipset drivers for your computer. That would probably fix it, but I don't know anything about Toshiba computers. Good luck!

Are you sure you don't have a illegal copy and haven't found the crack yet? ;)
Anyway SP2 is due to be released in the comming months I just read somewhere, no definitive date though.
I have no idea what kind of preformance issues with SP1 you are talking about though. Please explain.

Odd, are you sure that you have plug and play enabled? I have heard of stranger problems, but they always seem to pop up when you upgrade a windows OS instead of doing a fresh install. You could always try to back up your stuff, format and reinstall. BTW, the performance decrease with SP1 is not that bad at all.

Thanks Great Scott...and you hit it on the head...(I was in a rush when I upgraded the thing from XP Home to XP Pro...I also thought that it wouldnt be an issue as MS had surely fixed those problems in later releases of windows, right!! ;))

Anyway, it is a legit copy of XP Pro, however, I have heard many credible reports of performance decreases with SP1, so I am staying away! :)

Good idea on the drivers from the maufacturer. I will try that!
