Can it be changed?

this friend of mine said that if i turn the modem off for 2 hours or so, i'll get a new ip.

i havent tried it out yet, but will this work?

It depends. If you are on a dynamic IP, then yes. If you are on a static IP, then no.

Depends on your cable ISP and how they have their DHCP ranges configured.

I'm on Cox, and they have such a large space configured that my IP has NEVER changed. They set their scavenge time pretty high, so even though my lease expires, I'll get the same one later.

My lease runs one day. I've left my PC off for a week during vacation, and got the same IP. I've also put in a different card (which causes a new IP because DHCP leases are tied to MAC addresses), and put the old one back several months later. Got the old IP again.

<--comcast/attbi. my ip has only changed twice since i started the service, and it was due to internal changes at the company. My cable box and router have been off overnight before (power outtage) and my ip was the same in the morning... most broadband IPs are static

sorry bermuDa, but broadband IP's aren't static. to actually get a guaranteed static IP, the price more than doubles. same connection, static IP, another 50 bucks. sucks, huh?

Mine has changed at least 3 times since feb '01 when @home got fucked. I had a static address with them too (I was soooo happy, ran a website and all that from home) then they go bye bye, and optonline not only dosent OFFER static, it also blocks incoming port 80 requests.Fuckers.

I signed up with AT&T Cable three years ago. The IP address has changed once in three years. I moved from the apartment, AT&T got usurped by Comcast, I went to visit last week, same IP.

Just out of curiousity, why do you want your IP address to change Dude?

Ill tell you about my Cox service. Since I've had it, I've had the same IP. I think that the dhcp server on my node establishes a lease for an ip on my modem. If I disconnected for a week or more, I bet I would lose my lease on that particular IP and get a new, different one. otherwise, everytime I connect, I get the same IP. Even when releasing and renewing, same ip. I suppose you could have a cable tech change your IP by telneting into the router that controls DHCP for you. As long as the tech is on a higher tier than your regular Joe at the 1-800 number, they might know what your talking about and be able to do something about it.

By the way, alot of those messages about your ip being recorded for using a bad password from the links board are fulla crap. they aren't going to do any legal action or anything. If they did, I would have so many lawsuits... But I don't.

That's what I'm wondering...do ISPs disable this feature from the client side? I think my Cablevision docs actually told you to do this at one point for troubleshooting.

I do it whenever my modem messes up, which has become almost never in the past few months. At the worst, I couldn't get in a full game of C&C because OptOnline would dump my connection so often.

You have problems with optonline? weird.. I live practicly down the street from you (norwalk) and have only had 1 outage in 2 years.

Ive got Charter and they pretty much lease you the IP for 7 days then take it away and give you a new one.

This wouldn't happen to be because you've been denied access to certain "artistic modeling" sites that block IP's of failed attempts?

My ISP is road runner. I usually keep the same IP for about six months. I only loose my IP if I have to reboot the modem.

The DHCP protocal allows you to request any valid IP address, however actualy getting windows to request a diffrent IP, well, I have no idea.
