I'm thinking of a new computer, any suggestions?

What's your budget? Will it increase any in the next six months?

Yeah, how much you want to spend is everything, also a gaming machine or general use?

if you have the budget go intel.

Do you want to build it yourself, or do you want to buy a ready made machine ?. I would advise building one yourself, it is not hard and it is cheaper.

Don't buy from Gateway, HP, Compaq, Dell, etc.

Build it your own; use http://www.newegg.com to search for parts and you can actually select parts and put them on your "cart" and see how much they will all be before you buy them. Pretty nice and cheaper

If one knows nothing about computer hardware, putting together a computer can be REALLY tricky. We need to know if he wants a custom PC or store-bought PC before we can make any suggestions. And a budget!

Seriously, give us the specs of your old computer, your max price and your main use of it. Then we can give you options...

Whatever you do, don't buy it until after Thanksgiving. That's when prices normally drop, and you'll have all the day after Thanksgiving sales to buy the pieces you need. One of the best things to get at those sales are video cards and cd burners (DVD burner would be nice)

And yes, buy it in pieces and put it together yourself. And don't buy Intel, they charge 2x the amount then AMD does.
