I'm looking for a web site that allows sending free SMS messages to European GSM mobile phones.

i don't know any cross network free sms services, you should be able to find one for the provider, but the providers usually charge each other for cross network messages, so all the free ones disappeared.
i'd be interested to find one too,

try upoc.com. It has the free service you are speaking of, although I'm not sure if it works with EU GSM.
