MS windows 98 support?
Hi,
A friend's PC is giving her troubles. To help in this I can either try to repair the system or (preferably) back it up and install a fresh OS from their original CD's. My question is: does Microsoft still supply updates (via windowsupdate.com) for Windows 98 SE? I don't run w98 so I can't check for myself, and the MS product lifecycle site isn't helpful in that respect. Question has 2 parts: do they supply previous updates? (is is the site still active for w98se?) do they supply new updates as required? Thanks in advance... Silvy |
Yes, Microsoft supports product updates until the "End of Life" of a product. In case of Win98/98SE this date is Jan 16, 2005. They will stop supplying patches when the product enters it "Non Supported Phase" which will be 16 Jan, 2004.
I'm not sure if you can update Win98 through windowsupdate.com (most probably yes, but I'm running Win2k, so cannot check), but the Win98 site is still active (click here) and it has a download section. |
Thanks a lot for the dates and explanation.
I found the references to the dates on their site, but didn't understand what it would mean for me... Thanks! |
