anyone know how to make animated gifs or other images, preferablly with a freeware/shareware program?

Yeah - do a Google search for GIF Construction Set. It's put out by Alchemy Mindworks - the same place that has Graphic Workshop Professional - a kickass graphics viewer that has a hell of a slide show feature - it's shareware - they would like you to send them some money, but there's no expiration date on their software - you just have to put up with windows asking you to register every time you open it.

But, if you like it and use it a lot - send them some money - it's the nice thing to do.

I also suggest Jasc animation shop. You can get a 30 day free trial at www.jasc.com its 40$ to buy it.

I was looking around this area and discovered this thread.

I downloaded the program and it's pretty easy to use and quick too. IMO it's a good program for the simple stuff.

Using the GIF Contruction Set was really easy, I made this GIF outa BBtB's avatar here's a link to what it looks like. http://www.think-evolution.com/uploa...pFiction2a.gif

To resize the said GIF, you have to go to Block/Resize and then whatever size you want it, but you have to do it for every frame.
