Any one here A+ Certified?

Any here A+ certified?

I am currently taking a semester class at my high school on being A+ certified (certificate comes from IBM, not my school, so i will be IBM A+ Certified)

Currently learning vocabulary (SCSI, IDE, Parellel, Serial, etc etc., the basics)

tehblaed 09-20-2003 07:38 PM

Yes.

The_Dude 09-20-2003 08:22 PM

i took a course in high school too, and i was about to take the a+ test.

but.....it was like the a+ people only issued bulk tests in sets of 10 and there wasnt 10 people in my high school that were willing to take the test. (the high school would cover half the cost or so if we did it this way).

and i didnt feel like paying the whole amt to take the test alone.

steveincolumbus 09-21-2003 07:18 AM

got the cert, its an easy test, doesn't help in finding a job or any thing though. Some ppl might learn something through the class...

I took the hardware portion 2 years ago before the end of the school year and passed it no problem. Unfortunately, I waited until after school was out to try to take the software portion only to find out that my teacher quit so I couldn't get the voucher I needed to take it before I left for the summer.

Taking another A+ class is something on my to-do list.

frankx 09-21-2003 03:08 PM

Yep. Been certified since 96.

westothemax 09-21-2003 04:54 PM

Yeah I did it through my high school too. Network+ as well.

greydenn 09-21-2003 06:06 PM

I don't know if there is any difference between the comptia A+ and the IBM one, but every question on the comptia one was in the Testking answer bank. A+ software, hardware and Network+

God of Thunder 09-22-2003 04:09 AM

Yup. But got it in 1995, so technically, I'm only certified in DOS 6.22 and Win 3.11. :D

I see it this way, it can't hurt you to be certified. It will give you a slight edge over anyone else applying for the same job who is not certified. Get as many certs as possible.

Dunta 09-22-2003 04:12 AM

I was going to take it after attending ECPI, but never got around to it. Now I'm re-thinking why I went to ECPI. People don't care about Associates degrees, only BS's.

shalafi 09-22-2003 08:31 AM

Ive had mine since 98. Its not a very hard test (at least it didnt used to be) so you might as well get it. It cant hurt to have another cert when your applying for a job.

SuperMidget 09-22-2003 09:34 AM

Certs by themselves are worthless anymore. Too many people are getting paper certs and not knowing their shit. Getting actual work experience will help you a lot more. Companies will take a person with experience over someone with a cert any day.

IMO the A+ cert is about as worthless as tits on a boar hog (always wanted to use that one). Sure some people may benefit from it, chances are they no nothing about computers. When I had to take it for school, a friend and I sat there and corrected the Prof, just because most of his lecture was blatantly wrong. Given, the points he took out of the book were right. Just 5 years out of date.

cj22009 09-22-2003 10:28 AM

yes

Kaos 09-22-2003 07:41 PM

Certified in 2001 along a a few other Certifications.

Mad_Gecko 09-23-2003 09:07 AM

A+ in Compaq Deskpro's and Armada Laptops. = Useless....

It helped to narrow down the selection process when first getting a job, but now I put it @ the bottom of the CV.

Mr.Deflok 09-23-2003 04:17 PM

I haven't got mine yet but I was wondering, do you get a certificate or a card? If so, what does it look like (pic please)

If it is the same as in 96, you get both a card and a certificate. I'm sorry that I don't have either scanned, but from what I understand, they look completely different now. Hope this helps.

Also, I have interviewed many people over the years and I believe that an A+ cert always looks good on a resume, in an above and beyond sort of way. It's a good entry level certification and if nothing else, it helps people get acclimated to the testing and certification process. I don't think A+ is a waste of time at all. Comptia's Network+ is a good cert as well.

Raises hand...

Bonesaw 10-08-2003 06:10 PM

Yes.

Conclamo Ludus 10-09-2003 06:22 AM

Where I work its the first cert that you have to get. Thankfully they pay for it. I learned quite a bit that I use everyday on the job, and I learned quite a bit of stuff I'll never use. Its a good first stepping stone, but experience is priceless.

Cynthetiq 10-09-2003 06:25 AM

20 years in the computer biz and not a single piece of paper... 20 years of solid experience from desktops to servers to wan/lan

MontanaXVI 10-09-2003 03:39 PM

nope i manage just fine without it, i do not work in a tech related field though

Jesus Pimp 10-09-2003 11:50 PM

It's a pretty worthless piece of paper. It shows that you know how to turn on a computer. I ocassionally see companies require this in their job postings. Hilarious..

Nooze2k 10-10-2003 08:58 PM

Don't have my A++ (doubt I'll need it as I'm a programmer, not a techie... although I do know a PC inside-out). I will be getting my MCDBA (MS Certified Database Analyst) at the beginning of December though. Here's hoping they don't mess around with SQL Server too much with the next iteration.
