MAJOR problem...
Alright, here's my terrible story. I was installing sun java since I just installed mozilla firebird, and it asked me to restart my computer to finish installation. I do so, and upon logging in to windows after the reboot, I get a message box telling me that my windows product key is invalid and yatta yatta yatta.... I'm like uh ok? Then it loads my desktop and it was in the theme I was using months ago, and some stuff was the way it was a while ago. It seems that some of my things were reverted back or something.
Anyway, now I can't connect to the internet through cable either. It just won't work. My modem is on and the data light is blinking, but I think it has to do with the product key thing (i'm on dialup right now) now I didn't install this windows XP, i took my PC to a repair shop a while ago and he installed it for me... and I'm guessing he used an illegal key or something. Anyway, I'm on dialup right now and am pretty pissed. If anyone can help me out I thank you in advance. |

you should have a copy of the license with the system its a little rectangular shiny label., if not go back and ask for it, then use "is this copy of windows legal" from the drop down bar and it;ll tel you how to checkl or call in and reactivate it.

I had a somewhat similar problem.
My computer came pre-installed with XP Home. I got the key on side of computer too. Anyway I had to get a new hardrive but never got a cd to install XP Home. Anyway, I asked my friends with pirated copies if they had XP Home install CD. They of course only had Proffesional. So I installed that and got a program to get rid of the Activate XP problem. It worked fine untill I had 7 days left, a popup told me that I had 7 days left to activate XP. So I got another program that resets the activation at startup. It's been 7 days and comp is still running strong. I would rather be legal but I don't have access to an XP Home install CD. Now as for your problem,(sorry for long rant) whenever you boot your computer when it's not activated it should bring up the window to activate XP. I believe from there you can enter the key and it will contact Microsoft to validate it. PS I hope just talking about the programs I used to "activate" XP is ok. I left out all specifics.

well I changed the key, but my stuff is still weird. It seems as if it rolled me back a while, like my color was back to 16 bit (it used to be that way a while ago) and i had my old theme... also it's not detecting my ethernet card which i installed a week ago, so i can't connect through cable >< i tried removing the card, booting, shutting down, putting the card back in and booting, but it doesn't detect "new" hardware.. argh. gonna have to format i guess.

the drop down box usualyl appears in the explorer toolbar under help, but all it does is get you to verify the serial number, of course you can find it out from an installed system, there are tools that will tell you what the number is if you dont know, but it sounds dodgier than britney spears crystal habit.
