New CD-R/RW Drive (HELP!!)
I just bought a Sony CD-R/RW burner for my computer. I bought this HP computer back in December, but the burner has crapped out. Rather than wait for HP to repair it (and having no computer during the repair) I bought this burner. I just tried to insall it, but I cannot for the life of me figure out how to remove the one in the computer now.
I got as far as removing the side panels. Then I got stuck. I don't know the first thing about computers. Am I in over my head, or can I do this? Any tips? Thanks! Oh.. the computer I have now is an HP pavillion 734n, if that helps any. |
there should be a couple screws on each side of it's 'cage'. unscrew those, unplug the power cable and the ide cable from the back, and slide the drive out the front.
reverse the process to put the new one in. good luck :) |
Yeah, it's as simple as un-screwing all of the screws that are holding the broken burner in the PC, taking the cables off of the back of it, then putting in the new burner, putting the exact same cables back on it, and putting the screws back in. Yeah, that was a run-on sentence, but I ain't worried about it!

If that hp is anything like some of the compaqs that i deal with at work, there might be some sort of release mechanism with a sticker on the inside of the case that you need to try and figure out. usually you are looking for colored pieces of plasic to remove/push in so that it will release the screws needed to remove it.
Other than that, on a "normal" case usually you just remove the screws and cables (or take it out using the rails that the drive is mounted on). |
take pics and post if you can't figure it out then we can point out what to do
|
Ahh, now that's a good idea steve! I'm gonna tackle it again today, see if I can get this figured out.

Cool. With pictures, we should be able to figure out where the problem lies.

Yay! I finally got it done!!
It was as simple as getting the front panel off. Took a fair bit to figure out how to do that. Once that was off, slide out the old drive, slide in the new drive and blamo, all done! All that sliding in and out... how naughty! ;) Thanks for the help everyone :) |
Thanks for the post! you have my vote
