Home networking / internet problem

I know I should be able to solve this myself, but I can't...

PC #1
P4 2 Ghz running Win XP Home
connected by wire to Linksys router

PC #2
P3 500 Mhz running Win 98
wireless connection to Linksys router

Both connect to the internet directly through the router (i.e. neither PC is the gateway for the other)

I wanted to be able to share files between the computers, so I followed the instructions from Win XP. Setup XP using the wizard and made the disk for the Win 98 machine. The install onto the Win 98 machine went okay, but now in the system tray is Internet Gateway Status. In the wizard I indicated that there is no gateway computer, it's a direct connect to the internet through the router. Properties of Internet Gateway Status tell me that <10 bytes are sent or received regardless of what I do. Right clicking and disabling it has no effect.

Normally I would consider this just another thing about Windows to ignore. However, Internet Gateway Status frequently will not close when Windows shuts down (on shutdown/reboot I get the Program Not Responding dialog box). And I'm not sure, but I think it stops internet access sometimes, requiring a reboot.

I tried to un-install it, but I didn't see it in the Add/Remove software list in Control Panel.

Is there a fix for this ? Or a way to un-install Internet Gateway Status ?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Why don't you just use the standard Windows file sharing feature? I have a quite big home network (1 XP, 2 2Ks, 1 98, 1 Linux) and no probs with file sharing.

Things to check:
-make sure that you have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" service installed on both machines
-check the IP address of both machines (I've got static IPs on my private net, so pc1: 192.168.0.1 pc2: 192.168.0.2)

Than simply enter the following address to Windows explorer (on pc1): \\192.168.0.2\c$ (or whatever the share name is) (c$ is the default share on the C drive)

the internet gateway status is a PNP thing that is actually controlled by the router. The XP connection disk gave 98 that abillity. You should reinstall the XP connection disk. Seems like something from there didn't install correctly.

Did you create a workgroup for the machines?

Yes, I did create a workgroup. It was the only way I could get the machines to recognize each other.
